Johannes Brahms(May 7,1833-April 3,1897)was a German composer in the romantic music period of 19th century.Brahms has brought us many excellent works in his creative life.He has composed more than 90 adaptations and more than 200 songs, such as sonata.Symphony, concerto, piano music, etc.Among them,Violin Concerto in D Major,Violin and Cello Concerto in A Minor are the most famous.Although Brahms grew up in the general environment of The Romantic Period, his heart has always been inclined to classicism, and his music works contain wisdom and philosophy. In the era of romanticism,Brahms can still stick to his inner thoughts and create his own music works with classical rigorous expression style. In the history of German music,Brahms is often compared with Bach and Beethoven, and arranged together as "3B".Brahms is known as one of the greatest symphony composers after Beethoven. What is inconsistent with his actual popularity is that although his works are widely known, the audience’s evaluation is polarized and even resisted by the industry. However, his Violin Sonata received unanimous praise.Brahms wrote four violin sonatas in his lifetime, but only three of them were published, namely the First Violin Sonata in G Major published in 1879,the Second Violin Sonata in A Major published in 1886 and the Third Violin Sonata in D Minor published in 1888,all of which were concentrated in his later works. As far as these three violin sonatas are concerned, most of the data are from the perspective of performance to analyze these three works, and the literature research data on the theoretical aspect is rather weak. Therefore, this paper takes Brahms’ three violin sonatas as an example, and takes the musical form structure, theme material development, harmony, tonality layout and other aspects as the breakthrough points to deeply analyze the creative styles of these three violin sonatas. This thesis is divided into four parts to make a deep study of Brahms’three violin sonatas. The first part is an overview, introducing Brahms’ life and the creation background of these three Violin Sonatas, understanding the environment and cultural background in which Brahms created music works, and better understanding the value and significance of his works. The second part is the musical form structure of each movement in each of the three Violin Sonatas.By analyzing the musical form structure of each movement,we can find out the common characteristics and laws of its musical works structure. The third part is to analyze the theme materials and development of the three violin sonatas.Because the theme materials and development techniques of each piece of music are different,we can find out the commonness and characteristics of Brahms’ three violin sonatas by comparing different development techniques. The fourth part is to survey the harmony and tonality layout of these three Violin Sonatas, combine the harmony and tonality layout, find out the inherited and innovative parts of the three Violin Sonatas, and explore the similarities and differences of Brahms’ compositions in different periods.
