The Netherlands painter Peter Bruegel is known as the"successor"of Bosch.He inherited Bosch’s artistic style,and was also the first“farmer painter”in European art history.Bruegel’s paintings embodies his own wisdom and deep thinking about the times.In Bruegel’s pictures,he tends to express the macro scene with a unique bird’s-eye view..His works are frequently arranged with hundreds of characters intricately,and these characters looks very funny,vivid and interesting,and as well is difficult to understand.Why did Bruegel develop such a distinctive personal style at the time?What is his unique personal language in his paintings?With these questions in my mind,my reading of Danner’s Philosophy of Art offered me a further understanalding of the connection between the Netherland’s background and the artistic characteristic of the nation,and my reading of The Complete Works of Bruegel published by TASCHEN allowed me to examine the details and techniques of Bruegel’s paintings.Which makes me have a great interest in the painting language of his highly personalized painting.And after reading Karel van Mander’s Schilder-Boeck,I’v e got a comprehensive understanding of the artistic styles of contemporary Netherlands artists in the 16th century,and deepdened my recognition of the uniqueness and value of Bruegel’s art.This article analyzes the causes of Bruegel’s painting style by studying the geographic climate,ethnic characteristics,cultural context and other conditions of Flanders in the 16th century,and then analyzes its unique language and form composition of his paintings by studying his"Wimmelbilder"series and"Four Seasons Painting"series and explore the personal emotions and national cultural traditions embodied in his paintings.Through the first chapter,I analyze the environment and culture of his time.Through the second chapter,I search the clue of sketch works which has influence on his oil paiting language during his mature period.In the third chapter,I analyze its formal language and its meaning in his oil paintings through specific pictures,and finally I summarize the reason for why Bruegel being so great and having such a profound impact on later generations.
