Dreams are the visual activities caused by various stimuli inside and outside the body or the external stimuli remaining in the brain after a person falls asleep. The definition of illusion: empty, unreal, and changeable. The combination of dreams and illusions refers to those different from in reality,it is as unpredictable as a dream-like fantasy. The works of art containing dreamy temperament and atmosphere are what the author has been addicted to,and wanted to pursue and learn from.Dream is the main component of the dream factor, and it is also a theme that has long been attracting artists to explore and create. This article will start from the historical tracing of the theme of "dream" in Western painting art,and start the discussion on the artistic treatment of the dream factor in the painting works.Since the Middle Ages, most of the paintings related to dreams have been used as a kind of pictorial missionary tool, which is intended to explain the transmission of the oracle to the viewer;after Romanticism, under the inspiration of the development of early psychology, the role of dreams in paintings The performance is becoming more and more private, and the artist has begun to use the form of dreams to conduct in-depth research on people’s minds and hearts; In the 20 th century, surrealism directly used dreams, hallucinations and instincts as the main source of inspiration for creation.Artists used dreams to reflect their true self;until now, more artists are trying to present the perception and experience of current social groups, blending dreams and other elements together, blurring the "theme" of dreams,in addition to expressing subconscious content,it pays special attention to the performance of creating a dreamlike atmosphere and perceptual experience.Afterwards, the author selects three western modern and contemporary artists and their work cases, and conducts a specific exploration and analysis on the manifestations of the dream factor in painting,so as to better understand the artist’s creative methods and intentions.Chirico and Magritte were both painters who were keen to express dreams before the end of the 20 th century. The works of the former influenced many avant-garde artists: Dali,Magritte,Duchamp, etc.,undoubtedly surreal leading figure;the latter took his inspiration from it,without losing his own style, and became a painter unique even in the surrealist genre.Russ Irene is artist in the age of images(after the end of the 20 th century)who used pictures and photographs to create. The paintings of him show the characteristics of contemporary images while abandoning the reproduction function of photography. He add strong subjectivity to his creations,so that the work transcend these photos and reconstruct a perceptual world of time and space that is free between abstraction and figuration. Finally,on the basis of combing the history of painting and analyzing the painting language and techniques of specific artists, combined with my own experience and feelings, the author tries to apply the super temporal expression technique that is free between abstraction and figuration to myself in artistic. At the same time, the author also shares his creative ideas and process,in order to seek the possibility of how to properly use this creative method in the individual concerns, hoping to provide some inspiration for the creation of more artists.
