Edward Hopper(1882-1967)was one of the important painters in the development of American modern art in the early 20 th century. He is a part of the development of early modernist art in the United States, and his urban oil paintings reflect the conditions of modern American society and become a true reflection of modern urban life. However, the changes in modern American society reflected in the images of Edward Hopper’s urban oil paintings are issues that need to be further explored, because this is the key link in Hopper’s choice of subject matter and style in his creative career, and it is also related to his choice. The development path of early American modernism is the inner reason for his creative direction. Therefore, the full text is divided into four parts to study Hopper’s urban oil paintings. The first part explores Hopper’s personal experience, native American art, characteristics of the times, etc.,to find the reason why Hopper chooses urban themes for his creation, and summarizes Hopper’s urban themed oil paintings.,so as to classify the urban scene selection. The second part first collects images of urban themed works in his creative career, and then divides Hopper’s artistic creation stage into three stages according to time,1899-1921,1924-1938,and 1940 s to 1965.Years,that is,in order to reflect the gradual maturity of his artistic style.Secondly, analyze the content and form of Hopper’s works. The content analysis takes the statistics of the works as the starting point, and the formal analysis starts from three aspects: composition, light and color performance, and physical performance, and explores the style characteristics of Hopper’s works in detail. In the third part, based on the analysis of the formal language of the works’ images,it explores the relevance of his works to American society, poetry and art, modern life, etc.,and demonstrates the characteristics of social life in the works.questions, and analyze the implied meaning of the work.In the fourth part, based on the study of the spiritual world in Hopper’s works,he applies emotional expression to his artistic creation, and uses seemingly quiet themes to reflect the dazzling changes in modern society.Through the discussion of these four parts, this paper completes the discussion of Hopper’s urban oil paintings, and exposes the characteristics of modern life, people’s decadent and negative outlook on life in modern society, and the separation of human material and spiritual worlds. The artist Hopper is in it,but he uses his own power to dissolve such phenomena, and strive to return to the truth. In the process of studying Hopper’s urban oil paintings,I gradually realized the world in his heart and the real social status, and also kept himself stable in the impetuous social environment, which has certain significance for personal creation and thesis research.
