Research On The Publishing Characteristics And Paratexts Of Academic Translations By The Commercial Press (1949-2020

Translation has always been a communication pathway of cultural development and inheritance in human society since ancient times.Translation communication in the field of academic publishing can be embodied as academic translations.As a key media for the dissemination of academic cultural ideas among various countries,academic translations not only undertake the role of introducing western academic ideas to domestic academic area and building a knowledge foundation for the academic ecology and discipline system,but also serve as a advance condition for the globalization of Chinese academic achievements and the improvement of China’s international academic status.However,the current academic translators are facing a series of problems such as uneven translation quality and rough planning.Finding a way to break the dilemma has become the primary requirement of major publishing institutions.Therefore,researches on academic translations become a necessity.As a long-established publishing institution with a century-old tradition of publishing academic translations The Commercial Press has been translating and introducing a vital translation series of Western academic works such as Chinese translation of world academic Classics Series since the establishment in 1897.As the publishing institution in China that spans three centuries,The Commercial Press is committed to "serving education,leading academia,taking responsibility for culture and stimulating trends ".The academic publishing history of The Commercial Press is a mirror to the fate of modern Chinese culture and history.And it can be a significant reference for the current dilemma of academic translation publications.Therefore,this paper studies on it of The Commercial Press by summarizing the publishing characteristics of the academic translation of The Commercial Press during 1949 to 2020 macroscopically,and exploring the general situation of the translation series paratexts microcosmically.This paper initially defines the concept of academic translation works.Then,based on the wave of academic translation publications triggered by the reform and opening up policy it summarizes the history of academic translation publication in China and divides the history of academic translation publication of The Commercial Press into two phases.Next,from a macro-perspective,this paper sorts out the collected bibliography of academic translations of The Commercial Press using the bibliometrics method,and analyzing it from five aspects of characteristics:nationality,discipline,set,author and translator.From a micro-perspective,it studies on the paratexts taking two translation series(i.e.,Japan Series and Law Translation Series)as examples by analyzing the aspects of the publishing motivation and the translation view and comes to a conclusion that the paratexts is of great significance for academic translation.Through the analysis of the general situation of the academic translation publication of The Commercial Press,the author summarizes the contribution of The commercial press in the field of academic translation publication from three aspects:promoting the progress of domestic academic,enriching the field of arts and culture,and driving the development of society.Accoding to the analysis of the publishing rules of academic translation of The Commercial Press,the author gives suggestions to the publishing institution which is the main body of academic translation from both macroscopic and microscopic perspective.
