Based on the practice of translating chosen chapters from The Four Wind, this report provides an in-depth look at the whole process. This novel is an engrossing narrative of love and hope due to its compact structure and superb writing, with perfect scene description and detailed depiction of psychological activity. The Chinese edition of this novel has yet to be released. The text has the characteristics of a historical novel, including the relevant historical background knowledge, and the original author uses a variety of rhetorical devices to ensure the literariness of the work. The translator has created a thoughtful overview of the difficulties posed during translation and related solutions after several rounds of revisions. In this translation project, the translator primarily employs a variety of strategies to successfully address difficulties including direct translation, indirect translation, and transediting, based on a thorough understanding of the novel, character qualities, and language style,as well as the essential aspects of Gutt’s Relevance-theoretical Translation Theory, mainly using translation strategies such as substitution, amplification, specification, division and omission. This report has six chapters in total, mainly introducing the translation tasks, related translation theories and translation processes, and analyzing specific cases through effective translation strategies. In conclusion, this translation practice can help readers have a better knowledge of pertinent history while also providing a reference point for historical novel translation research.
