The past decade has witnessed the introduction of a vast amount of western movies into the Chinese markets and the birth of large quantity of dubbed movies. As a result, movie translation, as a branch of literary translation, is attracting more and more attention in the field of translation studies. However, few translation theories have been suggested as the guidance for this special branch of literary translation. This thesis aims at introducing a relevance-theoretical translation approach as a tentative translation theory to movie translation. In the main body, the author discusses the possibility and necessity of applying relevance translation theory to movie translation, then illustrates the actual application to E-C movie translation of relevance translation theory with examples from dubbed movies in terms of four levels: linguistic level, socio-cultural level, aesthetic level and personalized language level and at last raises some issues for further discussion. In conclusion, this thesis concludes that relevance translation can serve as a guiding translation theory for movie translators and help them achieve better results in actual translation practice. However, the thesis also points out that the theory is proposed as a new perspective on movie translation theories instead of as the sole translation theory for movie translation that can displace all other possible theories.
