The National English Curriculum Standard for Senior High Schools(2017Edition)emphasizes the adoption of “English learning activity” as the main way to implement the curriculum.Then the view of English learning activity is formed,which points to the direction of classroom teaching changes and provides a strong guarantee to the cultivation by subject.Numerous studies have demonstrated that the designing and implementation of reading activities based on the view of English learning activity is conducive to the development of students’ core competence.At present,most of the research on the view of English learning activity is based on lesson design,but rarely empirical studies.Therefore,it is necessary to study the designing and implementation of reading activities based on the view of English learning activity.In order to investigate English teachers’ designing and implementation of reading activities based on the view of English learning activity in some high schools in Shaanxi province,this study,based on Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives,draws on three instruments: Questionnaire,classroom observation,and interview.The research questions are listed as follows.(1)What is the degree of understanding and acceptance towards VELA and designing of activities based on VELA from the perspective of senior high school English teachers?(2)To what degree does the implementation of reading activities by senior high school English teachers meet the requirements of VELA?(3)What problems do teachers have and what supports do they need in designing and implementing classroom activities in senior high school English reading teaching based on VELA?The major findings are as follows.First,most of high school English teachers had a sound understanding towards the view of English learning activity and they had a high acceptance towards it.Second,most activities they implemented were consistent with the requirements of the view of English learning activity.Through classroom observations of teachers’ practice,it was found that most teachers implemented classroom activities that fitted well with the view of English learning activity,especially in comprehension activities.Third,there were some problems in designing or implementing classroom activities.For instance,some activities were designed out of the thematic context and did not achieve the objectives that they were supposed to achieve.To solve these problems and improve the implementation of the view of English learning activity,teachers need to improve their own professional competence and receive support and assistance from experts and schools.
