English writing teaching is an important content and part of English teaching in junior high school.Its ultimate purpose is to develop students’ ability of language application and cultivate English subject core competencies.However,the problems existing in English writing teaching in junior high school are worrying,such as neglecting writing teaching,focusing on English written compositions and lacking language practice activities.As a result,it is difficult for students to improve their authentic writing skills and core competencies.How to optimize the models of English writing teaching in junior high school has become the focus of attention.Project-based learning adapts to the times and education policies.Project-based learning is a teaching method actively advocated by the new curriculum reform.Its theoretical foundations are constructivism and project method.Project-based learning is gradually being valued and studied by educators in China.Based on the problems of junior high school English writing teaching,the need to deepen the reform of junior high school English writing teaching and the thinking of cultivating students’ core competencies,this thesis takes a total of 24 students from the ninth grade in M middle school as the research participants,attempting to apply project-based learning to English writing teaching in M junior high school,using case study,questionnaire,interview and observation to solve the following three research problems.First,what is the current status of applying project-based learning to English writing teaching in M junior high school? Second,how to design the steps of applying project-based learning to English writing teaching in M junior high school? Third,what is the effect of applying project-based learning to English writing teaching in M junior high school?The conclusions are as follow.The application of project-based learning to English language teaching in M junior high school is not ideal.M school lacks the substantive implementation of project-based learning.In addition,teachers and students had never been in contact with project-based learning,so their perceptions of project-based learning were limited.Accordingly,it is difficult for them to apply project-based learning.However,the majority of students gave it a supportive attitude,indicating that they were willing to try to apply project-based learning to English writing in M junior high school.According to the investigation of realistic and objective conditions,it is necessary and feasible to apply project-based learning to the English writing teaching in this class.Through literature collection,based on Kilpatrick’s project method and the steps of project-based learning,the application of project-based learning to English writing teaching in M junior high school is designed.The four main stages are:implementing the purpose of project application,executing project plan,implementing project initiation,inquiry and presentation and evaluating the project process and results.Applying project-based learning to junior high school English writing teaching is a positive practical and emotional experience for students,which can not only stimulate junior high school students’ interest in English writing and improve their attitude toward English writing,but only enhance their English writing learning ability and efficiency.Moreover,it can explore students’ learning potential,improve their independent learning ability,train their thinking quality and develop English subject core competencies.From this,applying project-based learning to English writing in junior high school is workable and effective.It also has positive impacts on solving the problems in English writing teaching and exploring the writing teaching way to improve students’ English subject core competencies.
