Reading and writing are closely linked and play an important role in English teaching.In practical English teaching,the cultivation of students’ reading and writing ability is still the weak link in senior high school.The integration of reading and writing teaching maximizes the pertinence and effectiveness of reading and writing,and achieves the purpose of improving students’ English comprehensive ability.The implementation of English subject key competencies is one of the urgent issues in English education in high school,and the integration of reading and writing teaching is an effective way.The new National Matriculation English Test(NMET)has made changes in the reading and writing section.Each unit of new senior English textbook of PEP edition has been designed reading for writing part.These changes all point to integration teaching of reading and writing.Therefore,integration of reading and writing teaching is feasible and in line with the current trend of teaching reform.Based on a thorough analysis of relevant studies at home and abroad,this study adopts questionnaire,interview,and classroom observation to examine the current situation in integration of English reading and writing teaching in high school.The research focuses on the following two questions.(1)Are there any problems in senior high school English teachers’ cognition and implementation of the integration of reading and writing teaching? If so,what are they?(2)What are the typical features of the integration of English reading and writing teaching? The study lasted for three months,from October 2021 to December 2021.In order to address the first research question,the author selected 46 high school English teachers as the participants of a questionnaire and four teachers as interviewees.In addition,four teachers were used as classroom observation subjects and the lesson examples were analyzed to address the second research question.The analysis shows that most senior high school English teachers attach sufficient importance to and understand the integration of reading and writing.However,the following problems still existed: inaccurate targeting,inadequate exploitation of text resources,inefficient use of teaching materials,unreasonable time allocation and imbalance between language input and output,monotonous training forms of integrated reading and writing,and limited way of evaluating integration of reading and writing teaching.Four excellent teachers have obvious advantages in teaching objectives,teaching content,teaching resources,teaching process,and teaching feedback.These can provide reference for reducing the existing problems in the integration of reading and writing teaching.Finally,the author puts forward some suggestions for the existing problems of the integration of reading and writing teaching based on typical features of excellent teaching examples.Owing to the constraints of theoretical and practical capabilities,this study inevitably has some limitations.For example,the sample size is limited,the research time is short,and the data analysis and processing are not comprehensive enough.The author suggests that more teachers can be selected for continuous research in the future.
