The materials translated in this report come from the Chinese-English translation project of the training program for international students commissioned by the Graduate School of Huazhong Agricultural University, and the specific chapters are “Doctoral Training Program in First-level Discipline of Animal Husbandry for International Students” and “Master’s Training Program in First-level Discipline of Animal Husbandry for International Students”.The program includes eight major contents:training objectives, discipline overview and research fields, training methods, duration of study, courses, training procedures, dissertation and appendix. With clear and complete structure, terse and formal expression, the source text is characterized by distinct informative, normative and operative functions.Guided by Chesterman’s translation norms, the translator completes the translation following the expectancy norms and professional norms set for this project. For the expectancy norms, the translator ensures that the translation faithfully and accurately conveys the information of source text and retains the form and style of the source text so that it presents the requirements of HZAU for the training of international students in Animal Husbandry in a complete and comprehensive manner. Then the translator ensures that the translation, with clear and fluent expression,is readable for the target readers and finally achieves the same function as source text.In terms of professional norms, the translator strictly abides by the accountability norm in each translation procedure and strictly control the translation process and translation quality through passing trial translation tests and maintaining the accuracy and consistency of terminology translation, especially the professional terms related to Animal Husbandry;in complying with communication norms, the translator maintains good communication and interaction with the project manager, reviewers, clients and other parties while fully considering the needs of the target readers and completes the work on time and with good quality to meet the client’s requirements;in terms of relational norms, the translator endeavors to achieve maximum similarity between the translation and source text in the three aspects of style, semantics and function. The translator attaches great importance to syntactic differences between Chinese and English, flexibly adopts various translation techniques and appropriately transforms syntactic structures to ensure clear semantics and logical coherence. The specific case study further illustrates that Chesterman’s theory of translation norms is a strong guide for translating informative and normative texts.
