English reading is an input skill,which is regarded as an important way for students to achieve their English proficiency goals.However,students are short of English language knowledge,insufficient vocabulary,insufficient reading,and poor reading habits,the improvement of students’ reading comprehension ability will be restricted.Secondly,The high school’s English teaching is still mainly based on teachers’ teaching of pronunciation,vocabulary and grammar.Long-term exposure to such traditional reading teaching will make students feel boring and lead to a decrease in their reading motivation.Therefore,this study aims to apply the narrow reading strategy in high school English reading teaching,and explore its impact on the incidental vocabulary acquisition,reading comprehension ability and reading motivation of high school English learners,and it is expected that the application of this reading teaching strategy can improve the effect of high school English reading teaching.Based on schema theory,"input hypothesis" theory and relevance theory,this research selects the first-year students of E Middle School in Tumshuke City,Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region as subjects,The number of experimental and control class were 60 and 60 respectively,a total of 120 people.This research adopts the experimental method as a whole,and also uses test method,questionnaire method and interview method to explore the availability of the narrow reading strategy,in order to verify the improvement and promotion of this strategy on students’ incidental vocabulary acquisition,reading comprehension ability and reading motivation.This study including three research questions: Firstly,what is the impact of narrow reading strategy on subjects’ incidental vocabulary acquisition and retention?Secondly,how does the narrow reading strategy affect the subjects’ reading comprehension ability? This study mainly explores four research questions: How does the narrow reading strategy affect the subject’s ability to generalize,guess the meaning of words,reason and judge,and extract details? Thirdly,what effect does the narrow reading strategy have on the subjects’ reading motivation? The question includes the following four dimensions.How does the strategy affect the subjects’ reading attention,reading relevance,reading confidence and reading satisfaction?After the 13-week experimental teaching,researcher drew the following conclusions: First,the application of narrow reading strategy can improve the subjects’ incidental vocabulary acquisition and retention.The researcher conducted an immediate post-test and a delayed post-test of vocabulary retention in the experimental class and the control class.The result emerged that compared with the control class,the incidental vocabulary acquisition and retention of the experimental class improved more significantly.Second,the application of narrow reading strategy can improve subjects’ reading comprehension ability.The researcher conducted a post-test on reading comprehension between the experimental class and the control class.The result showed that the subjects in the experimental class improve significantly their ability of generalize,guess the meaning of words,reason and judge,and extract details.Third,the application of narrow reading strategy had a positive impact on the subjects’ reading motivation.The researcher conducted a post-test of the reading motivation questionnaire in the experimental class and the control class.The result emerged that the experimental class had the reading attention,relevance,confidence and satisfaction improved more significantly.The above three research conclusions confirmed that narrow reading strategy can effectively improve students’ incidental vocabulary acquisition and retention,reading comprehension ability and reading motivation.Through this study,the researcher obtained the following teaching inspiration: Circular reading can enhance the repetition and accumulation of students’ incidental vocabulary acquisition.By accumulating a large number of schemas,it can strengthen the cultivation of students’ reading comprehension ability.Step by step,it can stimulate students’ reading motivation unconsciously.
