| The expansion of the scope and complexity of interpersonal interactions during the university period has led to a surge in social anxiety among college students, and good interpersonal relationships are beneficial to college students’ learning and life, and are also one of the important conditions for the development of college students’ psychological health and experience of well-being in life.Sensory processing sensitivity explains that the thoughtful and cautious habits of highly sensitive individuals may make them more prone to social anxiety problems in the process of interpersonal interactions. Most domestic studies on the factors influencing social anxiety among college students focus on peer relationships, family environment, and self-evaluation,and fewer studies have explored the causes of social anxiety at the level of individual traits. The existing studies on sensitivity mainly focus on "interpersonal sensitivity" and "rejection sensitivity",which are the sensitivity tendencies of individuals in social and interpersonal environments, instead of considering sensitivity as a characteristic of how information is transmitted and processed in the brain. The social anxiety model of social anxiety is not based on sensitivity.Shame also plays an important role in the social anxiety model, and the attachment patterns that individuals develop at an early age can have a significant impact on future interpersonal relationships. The present study introduces the trait of sensory processing sensitivity, together with parental attachment formed at an early age and shame developed in individuals’ later social experiences, and integrates personality, family, and emotional factors to explore the relationship between sensory processing sensitivity and social anxiety in college students and the mechanism of action, and to examine the chain mediating role of parental attachment and shame. In this study,1088 valid questionnaires were collected from college students in Sichuan and Hubei province, using the Highly Sensitive Person Scale, the Brief Parental Attachment Questionnaire, the Shame Scale for College Students and the Self-rating Social Anxiety Scale. The results showed that:(1)The sensory processing sensitivity and parental attachment of college students are at the upper middle level, the shame and social anxiety of college students are at the lower middle level.(2)Different demographic variables will affect college students’ sensory processing sensitivity, parental attachment, shame and social anxiety, which are as follows: Parental attachment and social anxiety were significantly different in the grades.Sensory processing sensitivity, parental attachment, shame and social anxiety were significantly different in the genders.Social anxiety has a significant difference in whether to serve as class leader.(3)There is a correlation between sensory processing sensitivity, parental attachment, shame and social anxiety among college students.Sensory processing sensitivity has a significant negative correlation with parental attachment, and has significant positive correlation with shame and social anxiety.Parental attachment has a significant negative correlation with shame and social anxiety. There was a significant positive correlation between shame and social anxiety.(4)Sensory processing sensitivity can directly and positively predict social anxiety, but it can also indirectly predict social anxiety through the chain mediating effects of parental attachment and shame.(5)Parental attachment and shame play a chain mediating role in the influence of sensory processing sensitivity on social anxiety. The hypothesis model is valid, and it has cross-gender stability.(6)The gender differences in the chain-mediated model only appeared in the specific pathways of parental attachment—social anxiety and sensory processing sensitivity—social anxiety, male parental attachment can significantly negatively predict social anxiety, but positively for females. The sensory processing sensitivity of men can positively predict social anxiety, but the direct effect of female is not significant,This means that parental attachment and shame play a fully mediating role between sensory processing sensitivity and social anxiety in women.Through the above research,it can provide theoretical support for understanding social anxiety and reducing social anxiety of college students. It provides a new perspective for the prevention and intervention of college students’ social anxiety in the fields of mental health education and psychological counseling. |
