Vocabulary is the basic unit that makes up language,and mastering a large amount of vocabulary is the key to learning English.However,in many areas,vocabulary teaching is based on mechanical memorization,which makes it difficult to motivate students and stimulate their interest in learning English.English picture books are characterized by beautiful pictures and simple language,making full use of the presentation of both visual art and language art mediums to enhance teaching and learning,which helps students’ vocabulary learning and can be a powerful supplement to elementary school English teaching.Therefore,using English picture books as a carrier to make boring word memorization vivid and exciting to improve the effectiveness of vocabulary teaching is of great significance to elementary school English vocabulary teaching.This study was conducted in the experimental and control classes.The data were collected by test papers,teaching logs,questionnaires,interviews and other research tools,and SPSS was used for statistical analysis of experimental data.Moreover,this paper makes every effort to solve the following three questions:(1)What is the effect of the integration of picture books into primary English vocabulary lessons on students’ attitudes towards English vocabulary learning?(2)What is the effect of the integration of picture books into primary English vocabulary lessons on students’ vocabulary learning?(3)How does the integration of picture books into primary English vocabulary lessons affect students’ vocabulary learning at different levels?The results of the study showed that the integration of interesting,contextualized and intentional English picture books into vocabulary teaching could stimulate students’interest in learning vocabulary effectively and have a positive impact on the change of students’attitudes toward vocabulary learning.At the same time,the concise and repetitive characteristics of the core language in picture books give textual support for effective vocabulary practice.Thus,it can change the previous situation of mechanical and straightforward vocabulary practice,making vocabulary use rooted in a relatively real context and facilitate students’ vocabulary learning,thus improving vocabulary learning efficiency.In addition,there are differences in the effects of the integration of picture book into vocabulary lessons on vocabulary abilities of students at different levels.The changes were more minor for students at the higher levels,most prominent for students at the middle levels,and more moderate for students at the lower levels.In conclusion,the application of picture books to elementary school English vocabulary teaching can effectively improve the drawbacks of traditional vocabulary teaching,which is tedious and helps promote learners’ English vocabulary learning.
