Hannah Arendt,a great political philosopher of the 20 th century, had a unique understanding of the public domain. As an early political philosopher who clearly delineated the public domain, private, and social spheres,Arendt’s ideas on the public domain are worthy of study. This article discusses Arendt’s public domain in three main sections. The first part analyzes the background of Arendt’s public domain thinking on two levels.First, the impact of the Second World War on Arendt and her unique life experience as a Jew provide a certain background for the formation of her public domain theory;second, the ancient Greek city-state system,Heidegger’s and Jaspers’ ideas, and Marx’s concept of labor all provide a large number of sources of ideas for the formation of her public domain theory. In the second part,Arendt puts forward the corresponding three major spheres of the private, social, and public domain of human labor, work, and action. This correspondence constitutes Arendt’s three-part theoretical framework of the public domain and builds Arendt’s theoretical system of the public domain. The third part, through Arendt’s interpretation of Marx’s thought, provides an in-depth review of the public domain, explores its theoretical value, reveals the limitations of Arendt’s existence, and then discusses the influence on later Western political philosophy.
