Analysis Of Huang Tingjian’s Ci To Poetic Tendency

In the long history of Chinese literature,poetry and Ci have been shining and affecting each other."Poetry Expressing Ideal" has long been the mainstream literature in China.After the late Tang Dynasty,Ci became popular in the life of citizens instead of poetry,but it was regarded as unrefined because of its narrow style.When entering the Song Dynasty,the current political situation was stable,and the poetry reform movement set off in the literary circle advocated the revival of Confucianism and emphasized the gentle and honest poetic tradition.In order to improve the status of Ci,Su Shi proposed that Ci should also reflect the social life,express the feelings of writers and at the same time add the artistic technique of poetry into Ci,trying to break the pattern of" solemn poetry but colorful Ci",so that Ci and poetry could be neck and neck,which was called "taking poetry as Ci".As the originator of"Jiangxi Poetry School",Huang Tingjian was also called "Su Huang" with Su Shi in the poetry circle,and was deeply influenced by Su Shi in his Ci writing.He continued Su Shi’s"taking poetry as ci",expanded the theme of Ci,introduced the technique of poems into Ci,and promoted more educated and elegant style of Ci.On the one hand,Huang Tingjian,as a typical traditional literati and scholar-bureaucrat,combined with his own unique life experience,extensively drew materials from real life,and pursued things with intention in his Ci.For example,he highlighted deep affection and sincerity in colorful Ci,embodied rational Zen in tea Ci,and integrated the sense of his life into relegated Ci.By extending the original common themes in Ci,or introducing the common themes in poetry into Ci,Huang Tingjian greatly expanded the expression scope of Ci and liberated the Ci style to a certain extent.On the other hand,Huang Tingjian constantly penetrated poetic expression techniques into Ci,and selected images frequently used in poems,such as mountain,water,chrysanthemum and wine.These images came from the writer’s life and exploration of the external world,and had strong symbolic meanings after being influenced by the writer’s emotions.Styles could be realized through fresh picture,vigorous language and full emotions to create fresh,natural,bold,relaxed and elegant Ci with poetic styles;in terms of the language,poems or allusions were used to enhance the historical thickness and enrich the connotation of the Ci.Huang’s Ci involved the elements in the poetry,which helped to blur the boundaries of poetry and Ci and strengthened the relationship between poetry and Ci,so that making the Ci become a window for the literati to express their sentiment just like in a poem,and setting up the unique character of Ci to poetic tendency.There are three reasons for the poetic tendency of Huang Tingjain’ Ci.First,it was the development and evolution of Ci style itself.A large number of literati,who did not understand music but became the main force of Ci writing,gradually helped to separate Ci from music and made Ci an independent literary style.They also made Ci constantly absorbed nutrients from poetry to enhance the literariness of Ci.Second,it was the influence of Su Shi’s"taking poetry as ci".Su Shi and Huang Tingjian had a good relationship.Su Shi took the lead in the creation of "taking poetry as Ci".His expansion in the theme and his bold style of Ci had a certain influence on Huang Tingjian ’s Ci to poetic tendency.Third,Huang Tingjian himself had a kind of unintentional and independent pursuit ’With profound knowledge and keen thinking,Huang Tingjian integrated life experience and Jiangxi poetry into Ci,providing an effective path for the development of refinement for Ci.By analyzing the poetic phenomenon of Huang Tingjian’s Ci,we can further understand the style of Huang Tingjian’s Ci and explore the relationship between poetry and Ci.
