| Since the creation of cities, urban populations have proliferated along with the expansion of cities, and human production and lifestyles have undergone tremendous transformations.Issues related to urban development and the resulting politics, economy, and culture have aroused the attention of scholars.Among the studies on urban theory,Lewis Mumford’s idea of urban culture has opened up a new perspective for us to study the development of modern cities and enhance the soft power of urban culture.Lewis Mumford is a famous American urban theorist, philosopher and literary critic, and his views on urban history and urban culture are far-reaching today. In Mumford’s view, the earliest ritual convergence of human beings is the initial embryo of urban development, and through the baptism of urban culture, human beings reflect, enrich, and improve themselves little by little to form a higher level of civilization and continue to be stored in the city.Urban culture is a cultural system formed by the externalization of urban humanistic values as the core, and the inherent characteristics of the city are concentrated in the value culture level. The rapid development of urbanization also affects the change of urban culture.Mumford treats the history of the city as the history of civilization and presents the cultural power of the city in an integrated way in the field of cultural studies. This paper examines Mumford’s urban cultural thought through five dimensions from the perspective of cultural philosophy.First, the theoretical sources from which Mumford’s urban cultural thought emerged are sorted out,and his thought mainly inherits the core contents of three philosophers,Marx,Patrick Geddes, and Ebenezer Howard. On this basis,he analyzes the concept of city and the function of "magnet" and "container" of city based on culture, and thus reveals the theoretical connotation of urban culture.Secondly, through the cultural criticism of the "metropolis" and the "giant machine",the critical theme and the transcendental path of Mumford’s urban cultural thought are explained, and then it is suggested that cities need to construct the concept of regional cities in the process of development, and that to overcome the predicament of human existence,it is necessary to inherit The paper then proposes that cities need to construct regional urban concepts in the process of development, and that overcoming the human existence dilemma requires passing on humanistic values. Finally, the thesis evaluates Mumford’s urban cultural thought, analyzes it as a whole, and explores the theoretical significance and practical value of his urban cultural thought in depth. On the other hand,Mumford’s philosophical reflection on urban culture is full of problems, which are also the problems that need to be solved in today’s urban development. The interpretation of Mumford’s urban culture thought provides an important reference dimension for the construction of modern humanistic city system. |
