Objective: This study focuses on exploring the relationship between parental head-down behaviour,self-esteem,social anxiety and online overreaction,verifying the chain mediating role of self-esteem and social anxiety,and making suggestions for reducing online overreaction among high school students.Method: This study investigated 632 high school students using the Parental Phubbing Scale,the Self-Esteem Scale,the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents and the Online Flaming Scale to explore the effects of parental phubbing on online flaming mediated by self-esteem and social anxiety.Finding:1.High school students’ online flaming was at a moderate to low level and differed significantly by gender,grade level,and parental education.Parental phubbing differed significantly by gender,whether or not they were an only child,and grade level.Self-esteem differed significantly by grade level and parental education.Social anxiety differed significantly by grade level and parental education.2.Correlation analysis showed that parental phubbing was significantly and positively related to social anxiety and online flaming among high school students.Parental phubbing was significantly and negatively related to self-esteem.Self-esteem was significantly and negatively related to social anxiety and online flaming.Social anxiety was significantly and positively related to online flaming.3.Parental phubbing and social anxiety positively predicted online flaming and self-esteem negatively predicted online aggressive behaviour.Less parental phubbing,higher levels of self-esteem and less social anxiety helped to reduce online flaming.4.Tests of mediating effects indicated that self-esteem and social anxiety mediated the relationship between parental phubbing and online flaming,respectively.Self-esteem and social anxiety mediated the chain between parental phubbing and online flaming.Conclusion:High school students’ parental phubbing not only affects self-esteem and social anxiety,but also has the ability to influence high school students’ online flaming by affecting self-esteem and social anxiety.Based on this,this study aims to develop precise prevention and intervention measures for schools,families,and social workers,starting from improving parents’ low head behavior,enhancing students’ self-esteem levels,overcoming students’ social anxiety,balancing self-esteem and social anxiety levels,and establishing a healthy online concept,in order to reduce high school students’ online excessive behavior and promote their mental health development.
