This thesis analyzes the narrative art of Song of Solomon from the perspective of“the three-dimension character”,“narrative progression” and “narrative judgment” in James Phelan’s rhetorical narrative theory. The interaction among main characters forms the basic textual dynamics the induce the key plots, affects the narrative direction and supports narrative judgment. The instability between and within the characters and the tension between the implied author, the narrator, and the reader collaboratively advance the narrative procession. The symbolic meanings of “gold” and “flight” constantly change as the instabilities or tensions emerge, get complicated and finish, which constitute the focus of interpretation and interaction between the author and the readers. In the phase of narrative configuration, the readers consistently response to the core events within the overall narrative context, namely, the interpretive judgment of the“father’s legacy”,the ethical judgment of the “Seven Days” assassination, and the aesthetic judgment of the ballad “Song of Solomon” and the entire narrative text of Song of Solomon.By studying Morrison’s various narrative techniques,it shows that the text demonstrates the difficulty and necessity of regaining the historical and cultural heritage.By tracing back to the roots of their own race, the black people should reaffirm their collective historical and cultural trauma, and solve the dilemmas with mercy within the community.Only by establishing the connection between the “past”,“present” and the possibility of “future” can the the black community be united by“blood”,“place” and “mind”.Based on the text, the rhetorical interaction between the author and readers is thus consummated. |
