Translation Of English Grammatical Cohesive Devices

In recent years,sports events have received increasing attention and controversy.Why are some actions blameworthy when they are not illegal?How can sports rules be improved?With these questions in mind,this writer selects chapters 6 and 7 of the book Sports,Rules and Values as translation materials,hoping to enlighten other readers who hold the same perplexity.When translating,this writer encountered a series of difficulties,among which the translation of cohesive devices is the greatest one.There are similarities and differences between English and Chinese cohesive devices.Paying attention to cohesion can promote translators to create more coherent and smooth target text to some extent.Therefore,the writer takes cohesion as the research focus,expecting to provide some references for future translation practice and research.This report adopts the research method of case study and takes the translation of English grammatical cohesive devices as the research question.The writer chooses a number of examples with cohesive relations from the original text,classifies them,and explores the translation of different types of cohesive devices.Based on the cohesion study of Halliday and Hasan,this report divides the grammatical cohesive devices in the original text into four categories:reference,substitution,ellipsis,and conjunction,and studies their translation.They are often translated into Chinese through omission,addition,retention,or conversion.Omission is frequently used in the translation of reference and conjunction to reduce the excessive use of pronouns and conjunctions in Chinese.Addition refers to the addition of logical relations that are not obvious in the source text to make the target text more understandable.Retention is using cohesive devices of the same type as the source text in the target text.It is not equal to word-to-word translation,because sometimes specific words need to be adjusted to conform to the linguistic conventions of the target language.Conversion is to change the original cohesive devices into other types,in order to restore the cohesive relations in the translation.Although research in this aspect is not rare in China,it still has many limitations,such as incorrect classification and insufficient discussion.Based on her personal translation practice,the writer has selected many examples as support,made a more rigorous classification,and offered more convincing explanations on the translation of grammatical cohesive devices,hoping to bring help to future scholars.
