The National English Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition,revised in 2020)(NECS)states that the overall goal of English curriculum in senior high school is to fully implement the Party’s educational policy,cultivate and practice socialist core values,and carry out the fundamental task of cultivating people with virtue.In 2014,the Shanghai Municipal Government put forward the educational concept of Curriculum Ideological and Political Education(CIPE),which takes cultivating people with virtue as the central link of teaching.The construction of CIPE is a way of vital importance to carry out the fundamental task of cultivating people with virtue.In English teaching,English reading discourses are rich in elements of CIPE,which is conducive to promoting the penetration and development of CIPE,and is the main position for carrying out CIPE.Especially in senior high school,the organic integration of CIPE with English reading teaching can effectively play the educational value of English subject,help high school students establish correct political awareness,cultivate their feelings of home and country and broaden their international vision,and effectively play the role of English subjects in leading the thoughts of high school students.Through sorting out and analyzing relevant research on CIPE,based on the Humanistic Education Theory and the Implicit Education Theory,this thesis investigates English teachers’ understanding and implementation of CIPE in senior high school,reveals the problems in implementing CIPE in English reading class in senior high school,and puts forward relevant suggestions.The research questions of this thesis are designed as follows: First,what is senior high school English teachers’ understanding of CIPE? Second,how do senior high school English teachers implement English reading teaching from the perspective of CIPE? Third,what problems do senior high school English teachers have in integrating CIPE into English reading class? In the study,40 English teachers in a senior high school in Chengdu were investigated and studied by means of questionnaire,interview and classroom observation and then corresponding suggestions were given for the problems found in the research process.The findings are as follows: First,most teachers have a certain understanding of CIPE,but their understanding is relatively limited.Some of them directly regard CIPE as moral education.Second,most teachers have made an active attempt to integrate CIPE into English reading teaching.According to the investigation,teachers dig the elements of CIPE based on teaching materials,and carry out CIPE mainly in the way of language penetration after reading teaching.Third,there are still some problems in the implementation of English reading teaching from the perspective of CIPE.The teaching process lacks the goal orientation of CIPE when implementing CIPE in English reading teaching.Teachers fail to fully explore and utilize the CIPE elements contained in the reading discourses.The teaching process lacks perfect evaluation system and specific evaluation standards.In order to better promote the implementation of senior high school English reading teaching from the perspective of CIPE,the author puts forward some specific suggestions from four aspects: developing teachers’ innovative thinking,innovating teaching design,exploring the CIPE elements in textbooks and strengthening the construction of CIPE in schools.It is hoped that the present study is able to provide some references for the research and teaching in related fields.
