A Study Of Modern Chinese Non-dative Adverbs And Adverb-adjective Multi-category Words

Many adverbs in modern Chinese have syntactic functions other than gerunds,for example,the adverb"必须"is used as an attribute in"必须费用",the adverb"肆意"is used as a predicate in"寒风肆意".Most of the previous studies have focused on the determinative function of adverbs and discussed the connection between this part of adverbs and adjectives.In this paper,based on the previous studies,we intend to further examine the other adjectival functions of adverbs,compare the grammar and semantics of non-dative adverbs with those of adverb-adjective multi-category words,and try to analyze the motivation and development trend of non-adjectival adverbs.Chapter 1 is the introduction,which introduces the origin and significance of this paper,the current situation of the study,the research method and the sources of the corpus.Chapter 2 clarifies that the objects of this paper are non-dative adverbs（FF）and adverb-adjective multi-category words,which are divided into adverbial-adjective(FX_非谓)and adverbial-adjective(FX_性质);distinguishes the functions of non-dative adverbs and adverb-adjective multi-category words,and the characteristics of adverb-adjective multi-category words as adverbs and adjectives respectively;counts 117 non-dative adverbs and 32 adverb-adjective multi-category words with gerund,definite and predicative functions.The functions of 117 non-dative adverbs and 32 adverb-adjective multi-category words were counted.In terms of function and frequency of use,there is a tendency to shift from non-pronominal adverbs that can be used as gerunds and determiners with"地"to adverbial-cum-category words,and from FX_非谓that can be modified by"很"and used directly as predicates to FX_性质.Chapter 3 analyzes the role of the marker"的"and"地"in promoting the non-dative adverbs as determiners,and illustrates the process of"V"in"FF+V+的".The process of"V"implicit in"FF+V+的"is explained.From the three categories of commentary adverbs,restrictive adverbs and descriptive adverbs,it is found that the semantic features of[+nature][+degree][+continuity]are highlighted in varying degrees in the non-dative adverbs and FX_非谓while their functions are increased.There are a large number of cases of non-dative adverbs as definite articles in newspapers and literary works.Chapter 4 discusses the reasons for the functional wandering of the non-dative adverbs.The functional wandering of the non-dative adverbs is shown by its functional gain during the transition to the adverbial partitive category.The chapter also establishes the prototypical categories of adverbs and adverbial partitive words.The non-dative adverbs are at the edge of the adverbial category,and its functional gain pushes it to move from the adverbial category to the adverbial partitive category;the internal reason is the return of the function before the deficiency of the adverb,and the external reason is the change of people’s perception,and the non-dative adverbs completes the conceptual integration through the metonymic mechanism of replacing the whole with the part.Chapter 5 presents the innovations of this paper and summarizes the findings of this paper,in which the non-dative adverbs converge to the adverb-adjective multi-category words in terms of function and semantics.
