Throughout the development of Chinese society, filial piety is a basic element in Chinese traditional culture, which runs through the whole process of Chinese traditional culture. In modern times, under the impact of Western culture,China’s national consciousness began to awaken. On the one hand,he accepted the Western ideas of democracy and independence. On the other hand,he reflected on the outdated parts of Chinese traditional ideas. At this time, the advanced intellectuals represented by Hu Shi during the May Fourth Movement Period seriously reflected and analyzed the thought of filial piety, and gave different judgments.Hu Shi began to criticize the family ethics in the traditional filial piety concept, and found the historical rationality of the thought of filial piety for himself. As a person at the intersection of old and new cultures,Hu Shi’s educational experience and the particularity of his time have formed his unique filial piety thought. In Hu Shi’s thought of filial piety,he believed that filial piety in China’s feudal society had become a means of ruling by feudal rulers, and "filial piety" was the spiritual basis for safeguarding the country’s rule and the ruling mode of integrating the family and the country. In a certain period of time,a "religion of filial piety" which required absolute obedience of children was formed.Under the traditional filial piety, parents can control the life of their children, under which family relations have a layer of class color. The spread of new ideas in the May Fourth Movement Period began to fundamentally impact the traditional filial piety ethics. Therefore,Hu Shi put forward "no descendants" and "father and son have no kindness".He emphasized that his "no descendants" did not mean that he should not have descendants, but should not be overly attached to the descendants,to liberate his own thoughts from the old society, realize personal value and make contributions to the society."Father and son have no kindness" means that the family relationship should be based on love rather than kindness.Children do not have to be attached to their parents, and parents are no longer the measure of their children’s lives. In a good family and social environment,it is easier to form an independent personality,so that some people will no longer put their energy on physical offspring,so that intellectuals can wake up,save the nation and make contributions to the society.Even if he has no offspring, the society will still remember him,so as to achieve "social immortality".Hu Shi’s filial piety thought was based on the traditional filial piety. He restored the essence of filial piety to a certain extent and redefined filial piety in combination with the historical status quo. With emotion as the bond,he established a more natural family relationship without oppression, made people pay more attention to the real feelings under the family relationship, and tried to make people put more energy on building a better society. So you can save your life and stay in the present. There is no denying that Hu Shi’s filial piety thought at that time had more historical rationality than the traditional filial piety thought. However, when we examine again,we find that there are some defects in his filial piety thought. In order to highlight the drawbacks of traditional Chinese culture,it does not carefully analyze the background of traditional filial piety culture, nor does it learn the essence of traditional filial piety thought, ignoring that traditional filial piety in the process of development has been distorted its original meaning;Hu Shi pointed out the drawbacks in the traditional filial piety, but there was no systematic and practical explanation in his filial piety thought.Apart from the traditional filial piety, how to be a filial son in the real sense.
