This study,on the basis of Systemic Functional Grammar,takes the Corporate Social Responsibility Reports of Johnson & Johnson and Shanghai Pharma in Fortune 500 2021 as the objects and conducts an eco-discourse analysis from the perspectives of unmarked themes in transitivity system,eco-related words in transitivity system,and mood and modality,using qualitative and quantitative methods.Through analysis,the following conclusions can be drawn.(1)In the Corporate Social Responsibility Reports of Johnson & Johnson and Shanghai Pharma,the unmarked themes are both widely distributed in transitivity system.The reports of Johnson & Johnson and Shanghai Pharma tend to use different verbs to collocate with unmarked themes to show the status and determination of these two enterprises to the public.(2)Regarding the four eco-related words — environment,environmental,emission(s),and waste(s),the Corporate Social Responsibility Reports of Johnson & Johnson and Shanghai Pharma invest massive language resources to demonstrate their emphases on the ecological environment.(3)The Corporate Social Responsibility Reports of Johnson & Johnson and Shanghai Pharma mainly consist of declarative sentences and they use high-value modal verbs to show their firm determination to manage the ecological environment,and employ median-value modal verbs to show their willingness and possibility to improve environmental condition,and use low-value modal verbs to demonstrate their limited ability to govern the environment.This research,based on Business English texts,enriches the research objects of eco-discourse analysis,provides a new perspective for the research of Corporate Social Responsibility Reports and gives reference for Business English study.Besides,this study provides reference for compiling Corporate Social Responsibility Reports and undertaking Corporate Social Responsibility for the purpose of building a harmonious relationship between enterprises and ecology. |
