The object of translation of this report is extracted from chapters 6 and 7 of Dr Johnson and Mr Savage,with a total of more than 30,000 English words.Published in1993,the biography was written by a British writer Richard Holmes.It is a biographical account of the friendship between an 18th-century English poet,Dr Johnson,and an unknown poet,Mr Savage.The whole biography is elegant in language,strict in textual research,and vividly and objectively describes their legendary lives when they were in their youth.For the rich content and objective narration,the present translation chooses Eugene A.Nida's functional equivalence theory as the theoretical support.In addition to choosing the theory as the basis,a good translation should also deal with the details of language.Based on the language features of original text and target text,lexical conversion,amplification,deconstruction and sentence recombination are mainly employed in the process of translation.On this basis,the author tries to keep consistent with the original style and strive to achieve the language effect similar to the original.The report consists of three parts: an introduction to the translation task,a case study and a summary of the translation practice.The case analysis in this report is a record of the author's thinking and processing methods in the course of translation,hoping to provide a case for the translation of biographical literature.
