| Stimulating students’ interest and cultivating their positive attitude is the purpose of English teaching in primary schools according to the English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education.For teachers,the first task of primary school English teaching is to stimulate the interest of learners and cultivate the positive attitude towards learning.For learners,it is also of great significance for their development.Based on the Sociocultural Theory,the author discussed the current situation of primary school senior students’ initiative in English learning and strategies to improve students’ initiative in this research.The purpose of this research is to explore the factors that affect the initiative of students in English learning and strategies to improve their initiative.In order to provide some reference for English teachers,this paper helps to improve students’ English learning initiative,build students’ confidence in English learning,and lay a solid foundation for their future English learning.The author conducted this research with 366 students in the fifth and sixth grades and an English teacher of Y Primary School in Chengdu as the research object.The research collected data by classroom observations,questionnaires and interviews,and combined qualitative and quantitative analysis.Then explored the factors that affect the English learning initiative of primary school senior students based on sociocultural theory.The results show that the factors affecting the English learning initiative of the primary school students are mainly divided into two aspects: internal factors and external factors.The internal factors are mainly weak learning foundation,lack of internal motivation,poor learning habits,low self-efficacy in English learning and weak learning willpower.The external factors are mainly about the challenges brought by the “double reduction”,the steep increase in the difficulty of textbooks,the impact of teachers’ factors,the problems of family education concepts,and the “pushy parents”.According to the influencing factors,the author puts forward the corresponding strategies.As a school,we should attach importance to English courses and ensure the teaching staff.As a teacher,first,we should cultivate students’ interest in English learning and stimulate their motivation.Second,we should help students develop good English learning habits.Third,we should improve students’ self-efficacy.Fourth,we should consider the development levels of students and carry out hierarchical teaching.Fifth,we should create a good learning environment for students.Sixth,we should improve our professional level and personality charm.As a parent,we should pay attention to the children’s learning and growth process,actively cooperate with teachers,not too much interference in children’s learning,treat social phenomena rationally,and not blindly follow the trend. |
