In 2017,the Ministry of Education issued the English Curriculum Standards for Ordinary High Schools,which put forward the extracurricular reading of senior high school students as an important goal and task of English learning.In June 2021,Chongqing began to implement a new college entrance examination model,in which question setting of English test has become more flexible.If you want to improve your English academic performance,extracurricular reading becomes particularly important.In this context,this study takes the sophomores of Youyang No.2 Middle School as the research object to study the influence of extracurricular English reading on the academic achievements of high school students.The research questions mainly include: 1.What is the current situation of the students’ extracurricular English reading in Youyang No.2Middle School? 2.What is the knowledge and guidance of the English teachers on students’ extracurricular reading in this grade? 3.What problems do the students have on extracurricular English reading at present? 4.Can students effectively improve their English academic achievements after conducting ordered,organized and teacher-guided extracurricular reading?This paper adopts literature,questionnaire and interview to investigate the current situation of extracurricular English reading of the sophomores in Chongqing Youyang No.2 Middle School,to understand the current situation of English extracurricular reading of them in this school and the guidance of teachers.Based on the results of investigation,action research and experimental research were adopted to hypothesize the research problem firstly,and action research plan was formulated to verify the experimental hypothesis.Two classes in the school where the author worked for with roughly the same overall academic achievements and class size were selected to conduct a comparative research.The experimental class conducts ordered and organized extracurricular reading under the guidance of teachers while the control class continued to conduct the previous education mode.Finally,SPSS software was used to quantitatively analyze the pretest and post-test scores of the experimental subjects and draw conclusions.The research shows that: first,after a semester of comparative experiment,both of the overall English scores of the experimental class and the control class have been improved,but the scores of the students in the experimental class have been improved more significantly.Second,from the perspective of listening,reading,writing and other aspects,the experimental class students’ language ability has been improved more significantly.Based on the above research,this paper believes that ordered and well-organized extracurricular reading under teachers’ guidance can improve students’ English academic achievements.By analyzing whether the extracurricular reading can improve senior school students’ English academic achievements,this research can be a reference for the further studies to promote and improve high school students extracurricular English reading.However,there are some problems in this study such as limited survey samples,complex experimental operations,short experiment period,etc,all of which will affect the overall effect of this study,this need to be continuously optimized and improved in the future work. |
