| As often applied in western art,a symbolic painting language plays an important role on the art development in western countries. No matter in prehistoric age, renaissance time,or different periods in which generate romanticism, symbolism and expressionism, this certain form of art painting is an indispensable part on account of unique aesthetic experiences for observers, which obtains its metaphorical and abstract notion, and also uncertainness, altogether arouse the resonance in mind.Peter Doig,a Scottish painter,is now considered one of the most renowned living figurative painters.Art critic Jonathan Jones once said about him: “Amid all the nonsense, imposters, rhetorical bullshit and sheer trash that pass for art in the 21 st century,Doig is a jewel of genuine imagination, sincere work and humble creativity.” Doig’s symbolic art works also deeply influence many contemporary young artists, which combines a tradition of academic artists with creative modern artists.Peter Doig can freely break space between reality and imagination and express his characteristic art style. This thesis will introduce Doig’s own life experiences, and how different inhabitants influence his unique artistic symbols.Frequently drifting from Trinidad,Canada or to UK,various ethic backgrounds all inspire him, therefore, his painting style implies a hint of drifters.Modern art does not reflect objectiveness in reality, but also manifest imagination full of emotions.Observing through Doig’s paintings,he has his own innovative symbolic images. In other words, art along the way seeks symbolic description and expression in a creative manner. This paper will set forth and analyze from four aspects as follows: firstly,it will introduce Peter Doig’s personal experiences in art and life, and then discusses how his figurative painting style creates and transfers. The chapter two focuses on his specific painting language and art skills.Chapter three draws attentions to Peter Doig’s beginning as an artist and his moulding in art style. Finally, the last chapter centers on my graduation series of oil paintings, and expresses how Peter Doig influences my oil works. |
