Research On The Intercultural Communication Competence In Online Teaching Practicum Of The Master Students Of Teaching Chinese To Speakers Of Other Languages At Universities In Jinan

Abstract/Summary:
Teaching practicum is an important practical link to improve the international Chinese teaching ability of Master Students of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(henceforth TCSOL).Under the background of COVID-19 and "Internet+",online teaching practicum has become the main practicum mode for Master Students of TCSOL during the epidemic.According to The Guiding Curriculum for Master Students of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages,intercultural communication competence is one of the important professional qualities of Master Students of TCSOL.In the cultivation process of Master Students of TCSOL,teaching practicum is one of the main ways to reflect their intercultural communication competence,because it directly contacts with non-first language students of Chinese.In addition,online teaching practicum is mainly implemented currently.So this study focuses on intercultural communication competence in online teaching practicum.After reviewing the literature,it is found that few researchers have conducted study on the intercultural communication competence in online teaching practicum.In addition,there are few studies on the intercultural communication competence in online teaching practicum of the Master Students of TCSOL at universities in Jinan.Therefore,this study is based on Master Students of TCSOL at universities in Jinan who have participated in online teaching practicum,and is centered on the following three research questions:(1)What kind of intercultural communication competence should the Master Students of TCSOL possess in online teaching practicum?(2)What is the current situation of the intercultural communication competence in the online teaching practicum of the Master Students of TCSOL at universities in Jinan?(3)What are the ways to improve the intercultural communication competence in online teaching practicum of the Master Students of TCSOL at universities in Jinan?Based on the analysis of the criteria proposed by previous authors and the specific situation of online teaching practicum of the Master Students of TCSOL,this study summarized the intercultural communication competence that the Master Students of TCSOL should possess in online teaching practicum.This study designed a questionnaire based on that in order to know the current situation of intercultural communication competence in online teaching practicum of Master Students of TCSOL at universities in Jinan.In addition,this study interviewed some of the Master Students of TCSOL at universities in Jinan who have participated in online teaching practicum.Then the questionnaire and interview data was combined in order to make suggestions for the improvement of intercultural communication competence in online teaching practicum of Master Students of TCSOL at universities in Jinan.The main conclusions of this study are as follows,(1)The intercultural communication competence in online teaching practicum of Master Students of TCSOL can be divided into three dimensions which are intercultural awareness in online teaching practicum,intercultural skills in online teaching practicum and intercultural attitudes in online teaching practicum.Intercultural awareness in online teaching practicum includes the Chinese culture involved in the teaching content,the cultures of the students’ countries related to the teaching content and the ability to perceive and understand cultural differences.Intercultural skills in online teaching practicum include online language communication skills,teaching skills for developing intercultural communication competence and cultural conflict resolution skills.Intercultural attitudes in online teaching practicum include attitudes towards Chinese culture and attitudes towards cultures of students’ countries.(2)There is an overlap between the intercultural communication competence in online teaching practicum and the offline teaching practicum for Master Students of TCSOL.However,online teaching practicum requires higher online language communication skills,teaching skills for developing intercultural communication competence and cultural conflict resolution skills for Master Students of TCSOL because of the inability to conduct face-to-face and network delays.In regard to the intercultural communication competence in online teaching practicum,Master Students of TCSOL at universities in Jinan are good at the command of Chinese culture involved in the teaching content,the ability to perceive cultural differences and the online language communication skills.In addition,they can treat Chinese culture objectively.Master Students of TCSOL at universities in Jinan need to try hard on the command of cultures of the students’ countries related to the teaching content,the ability to understand cultural differences,teaching skills for developing intercultural communication competence,cultural conflict resolution skills and the cultural attitudes towards students’ countries.(3)The ways can be divided into three levels which are to improve the intercultural communication competence in online teaching practicum of Master Students of TCSOL at universities in Jinan.At the level of Master Students of TCSOL,the improvement ways include emphasizing the study of intercultural courses,improving the initiative of learning intercultural knowledge,improving the online Chinese classroom management ability and actively participating in online international Chinese practice activities.At the level of teachers of Master Students of TCSOL,the improvement ways include enhancing the practicality of intercultural courses and strengthening online intercultural case study.At the level of training units of Master Students of TCSOL,the improvement ways include organizing intercultural lectures and trainings related to online teaching practicum and increasing online international Chinese practice opportunities.
