The Yunnan-Guizhou border region refers to the highland area on the border between northwestern Guizhou and northeastern Yunnan, mainly in the enclosed area formed by Zhaotong(昭通),Weining(威宁),Hezhang(赫章)and Zhenxiong(镇雄).The border areas of Yunnan and Guizhou are inhabited by a large number of ethnic minorities and are characterised by a mixture of small and large settlements, and because of their marginal location, they are relatively backward in terms of socio-economic development. After the First Opium War,along with the Western imperialist invasion,Protestantism was gradually introduced to the Yunnan-Guizhou border area, which had a certain impact and influence on the social development of the region. After the Second Opium War,thanks to the support of the unequal treaties, the Christian Church gradually took root in the Yunnan-Guizhou border area, and the Church began to systematically write and record the history, humanities and social landscape of the Yunnan-Guizhou border area, representing the Yunnan-Guizhou border area in the eyes of the Western ’other’ in a specific time and space. This part of the literature is of special significance for examining the social development of the Yunnan-Guizhou border area.At the same time,in the course of the social and historical development of the Yunnan-Guizhou border area, there also existed a part of the historical materials written by the regional government or ethnic groups, which represent the Yunnan-Guizhou border area in the eyes of the "self" in a specific time and space, and this part of the materials is also of special significance for the examination of the social development of the Yunnan-Guizhou border area. Therefore, this paper takes the ’missionary literature’ and the ’historical materials of the border area’ as the starting point for a comprehensive study and analysis of the social development of the modern Yunnan-Guizhou border area and the missionary practices of the missionaries in the border area. Two main issues are examined in this paper. The first is that, given the unique geographical and economic conditions of Yunnan and Guizhou, the spread of Western religions in the region relied heavily on external ’explicit conditions’,while scholarly research on Christianity in the region has traditionally focused on ’implicit’philosophical, theological and psychological studies. The study of Christianity in the region has traditionally focused on ’implicit’ philosophical, theological and psychological research, with less research into ’explicit’ missionary organisations and economic foundations,so this article focuses on the ’economic foundations’ and’economic utility’ of religious development in the Yunnan-Guizhou border area. This paper therefore focuses on the "economic basis" and "economic utility" of religious development in the Yunnan-Guizhou border area.Secondly, there are some discrepancies between the ’missionary literary sources’ and the ’historical sources of the border area’,which in some cases record and comment on the same events. From these differences we can examine the different subjective creative aims of the different literary participants, and so this paper also examines the literary interpretations reflected in the conflict between literature and history.Specifically, the first and second chapters of this paper mainly analyze the economic relationship and practice in the development of Christian religion in the border area, and summarize the unique mode of economic and religious development in a specific area. The third and fourth chapters of this paper mainly focus on the multidimensional construction of the image of missionaries in border areas for horizontal analysis, analysis of the construction, acceptance and change of the image of Christian missionaries in border areas, and systematically conclude the characteristics of the construction of the image of missionaries in this special region. All in all, this paper is dedicated to the study of Christian literary activity in the Yunnan-Guizhou borderlands,to interpreting the interaction and two-way influence between missionary literature and various historical sources, and to examining trends in the development of regional society in the light of their mutual reference. It is also dedicated to the interpretation of the existing historical and literary materials of the border area, expanding the traditional dualistic relationship between literature and history to a modern pluralistic relationship between literature and history, and adding interdisciplinary perspectives such as "economics" and "sociology" to the construction of the literary and historical space. In addition, the study of Christianity in the Southwest has been broadened by the inclusion of interdisciplinary perspectives such as "economics" and "sociology".In the specific study, the mutual promotion of textual and historical research is given due attention, and the space of meaning contained in the literary and historical materials is fully explored. In this way,we can avoid and limit the biases in our respective interpretations, and provide empirical references for the construction of the values of governance in the new era. |
