Lexical chunks which possess the characteristics of connecting words with grammar,context and discourse play a key role in the process of language production,making solving existing problems of English writing achievable.Besides,National English Curriculum Standard for General High School(2020 Edition)emphasizes the importance of understanding meanings of words in specific topics and contexts,at the same time,the significance of presenting new words in the form of lexical chunks and accumulating lexical chunks.This paper intends to combine the lexical approach with English writing teaching,which enables students to effectively study lexical chunks by centering on specific context and relying on discourse,serving the purpose of outputting lexical chunks accurately and flexibly in English writing.Taking 40 students from Grade 1 in a senior high school of Shenyang as research subjects,the author implements two rounds of action research in order to explore the following research questions:1.What are the effects of the lexical approach on students’ English writing attitude in senior high school?2.What are the effects of the lexical approach on students’ English writing ability in senior high school?3.What are the effects of the lexical approach on students’ usage of lexical chunks in their compositions?The quantitative data collected from questionnaires and tests are mainly processed by SPSS 21.0,meanwhile,the qualitative data collected from interviews is utilized as auxiliary instruments to timely analyze and solve problems in the research.At the beginning of the first round of action research,through the pre-questionnaire as well as pre-test,the author better understands existing problems in students’ English writing and strategies of learning lexical chunks.In accordance with the results of the first round,the action plan in the second round of research is adjusted to better implementing the lexical approach and achieving satisfying teaching effects.Through the analysis of research data,the paper proves that the lexical approach is beneficial to improving students’ attitude towards English writing.Meanwhile,the English writing ability of senior high school students is also positively enhanced through analyzing the results of writing tests,embodied in improvements in content,structure and language of writing.Furthermore,the lexical approach positively fosters students’ amount of lexical chunks and usage of different types of lexical chunks in their compositions as well as the accuracy of utilizing lexical chunks.
