Rosa Loy(1958)is an artist of the New Leipzig School of painting. She has a rigorous narrative ability in painting,is keen on depicting figurative things, and is good at showing personal emotions in painting. Her paintings have femininity and romantic feelings, and her works are different from other New Leipzig artists with her unique female perspective and female experience.Roy’s paintings focus on the female theme, separating the male characters(some of the works show dwarf male images).Always take the various roles of women as the main body of painting, these women have their own social identity, expressed through the appearance, clothing and behavior of the characters. The main body of the picture is usually depicted as two or more female images working and living together, which are presented in the same picture by imitation or reproduction. There will also be female images of different sizes around the main body of the painting, resulting in a serious imbalance in the proportion of the body.Roy juxtaposes these characters in the same scene or multiple scenes, showing a surrealistic space construction, where there is no stable structure and order, and the female images are placed at will in the picture, there is no distinction between primary and secondary. In the narrative,it shows chaotic, contradictory, multiple, internal and incoherent themes.Growing up in East Germany, combining the social model of the past with the concrete language of the times,Roy used romanticism and surrealism in his creation to express his personal cognition of life, emotion and inner world through these idle, alienated and thoughtful female images.Combing and studying Roy’s artistic creation,it is found that the artist reveals the psychological state and artistic connotation of the characters through the image, action and form of the characters in the picture,as well as the interaction between the characters,so as to understand the artist’s expression of collective memory and personal experience.Through the study of implied images to explain and reveal the emotional expression and the inner spirit contained in the works, and to experience the attitude of the New Leipzig School of painting to look at the relationship between society, times and individuals from the perspective of women.Roy’s paintings show a strong narrative ability, adding unique storylines, mysterious scenes, allegorical themes and fragmented collage images to the picture, forming a very feminine work.Based on the study of female images in Roy’s paintings, this paper first expounds Roy’s time background, painting schools and painting experience, and discusses the reasons for the formation of Roy’s painting style and the choice of female themes in combination with subjective and objective reasons.Secondly, the female images in painting are discussed and summarized respectively, and the artistic characteristics of female images in painting are analyzed by character selection, body schema and the shaping of character relationship. Finally,it discusses the artistic expression and aesthetic connotation of female images in Roy’s paintings, focusing on the connotation and significance of female images in Roy’s paintings, and discusses how collective memory and individual experience are expressed with the help of images.
