Color is an important part of painting art and an independent art language.Milton Avery broke the traditional mode of thinking with the use of color, using color modeling and color expression to convey his thinking and perception of art and life.Avery’s works are the carrier of his inner world and spiritual pursuit. His bold and exaggerated colors show his unique aesthetic values.Through sorting out domestic and foreign literature on Avery,I gradually came to know and understand this unique, harmonious, poetic and peaceful color, and tried to integrate it into my own creation through practice. This paper will discuss from three aspects: The first part, through understanding the general environment of American culture and art in the late 19 th century and early 20 th century, analyzes the background of Avery’s time, and analyzes the influence of American Impressionist and Matisse art views on Avery’s artistic exploration and aesthetic appreciation. The second part closely combines Avery’s works, and analyzes Avery’s color features from three perspectives: color order, decoration and emotional expression,so as to understand the subtle relationship of color. In the third part, based on the analysis of the application of color in Avery’s paintings, the artistic concept of color application in his artistic creation is applied to his own works to carry out artistic practice and explore the contemporary significance and value of Avery’s paintings.
