| The teaching of listening and speaking is one of the most important aspects of the English learning process in developing students’ potential for language learning and is also used to help students acquire information and engage in intercultural communication.For many years,listening and speaking in English has been a constraint on students’ English learning,especially in terms of their ability to apply English.The reason for this is that there are many factors in the teaching of basic English listening and speaking,especially listening and speaking pedagogy is far from being able to adapt to the actual needs of students’ English application skills in society today,which has led to the prevalence of “dumb English” and the embarrassing phenomenon of “high score and low ability” in which English learners do not understand or speak English in actual English communication.This is the reason why the situational teaching approach was developed.The situational teaching approach focuses on the students’ emotional experience in the learning process.Teachers create situations to stimulate students’ interest according to the teaching objectives and teaching contents,so that students can obtain information and express themselves in the situations.However,most of the research on the situational teaching approach in listening and speaking teaching has been confined to the meaning and approach of it.Therefore,the study is to explore how the situational teaching approach can be systematically applied to English listening and speaking teaching to help students improve their interest and ability in learning English listening and speaking and promote their overall English language proficiency.This study is a three-month teaching experiment conducted in the high school where the author did the internship.The subjects of the study were students in two parallel classes in the senior year,with 54 students in the experimental class and 54 students in the control class.The experimental class used the situational teaching approach to teaching English listening and speaking,while the control class followed the traditional approach to teach.The study used questionnaires and tests to address the following two questions:(1)How can the situational teaching approach be applied to the teaching of English listening and speaking in high school?(2)What are the effects of the situational teaching approach applied to the teaching of English listening and speaking in high school?After the experiment,the author used SPSS26.0 to analyze the data and had the following findings: firstly,teachers can systematically apply the approach when teaching English listening and speaking by pre-designing the teaching context before class,using the context during class and reflecting on the teaching context after class.During the lesson,teachers can apply context in the teaching process according to the teaching objectives and the teaching content.Secondly,after applying the situational teaching approach to the teaching of English listening and speaking in high school,it can be found that the situational teaching approach has a positive effect on the teaching of English listening and speaking in high school.It is conducive to enhancing the interest and learning performance and improving the learning of English listening and speaking. |
