As an important ability to obtain information,reading acts a crucial role in English teaching in senior high school.There are still teaching defects in English reading teaching although some achievement has been made.English reading is a receptive skill,which has a positive influence on oral English and English writing skill.Most students consider it that English reading learning is boring and difficult in the past.If this serious condition is still neglected,students' enthusiasm for learning English reading will gradually decrease.Under current situation,a new teaching method is urgently needed to change the plight of students in senior high school.Therefore,author makes a proposal that the situational teaching approach(STA)should be applied to English reading teaching.This study aims to judge of that whether this new method can heighten the students' motivation on reading and improve reading scores.Therefore,this paper focuses on the two main problems as follows:1.Can STA improve senior high school students' motivation in learning English reading?2.Can STA improve senior high school students' English reading scores?The author conducted a semester of experimental research in order to solve the problems raised by this experiment.The participants included the two parallel Grade 2classes of fifty respectively from NO.2 Senior High School,which class 1 and class 2was chosen to be control class(CC)and experimental class(EC).Before the experiment,the pre-questionnaire and pre-test were carried out in both classes to guarantee the same level of two classes.The CC still adapted to the traditional teaching method while the EC applied to the situational teaching approach.A semester later,CC and EC were required to perform the post-questionnaire and post-test as to check whether there was significant difference between them.The instruments included questionnaires,tests,interview and SPSS.The SPSS 19.0 software was used to process and analyze the data in this study.After the data analysis,it can be drawn the conclusion that the situational teaching approach is able to not only heighten the students' English reading motivation but also improve students' English scores.In addition,some teaching implications have been drawn in this study.It is most important for students to correct their learning motivation.As for teachers,the created situations should be close to daily life and the selected materials should be learnable for students when teachers adopt STA.At the same time,teachers are required to have a great mastery of new knowledge and prepare or provide a number of learning activities in different types for learners.What's more,a teacher should be consistent in his lectures.Students will experience an efficient English reading class.
