The development and improvement of one’s thinking skills is not an overnight process,and the development of thinking quality is of great benefit for later social adaptation and better development during the time as a student.The National English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(NECS 2017)clearly states that developing students’ core competencies of English subject and placing emphasis on developing students’ thinking quality is one of its important components.English reading classes are not only an important type of English teaching lesson in secondary schools,they are also the main venue for developing students’ thinking quality.English reading teaching plays a vital role in the development and training of students’ thinking quality.However,the current English reading class does not pay enough attention to students’ thinking skills,and the teaching models and teaching methods are too rigid and not conducive to the cultivation and development of students’ thinking quality.5E teaching model consists of five closely related segments,each involving different thinking activities,and is well suited to help students develop their thinking quality.In view of this,the aim of this study is to apply 5E teaching model to a senior high school English reading class and explore its effectiveness in cultivating students’ thinking quality.In this study,students from two parallel classes of senior grade two in a senior high school in Guangzhou,Guangdong Province were selected,in which the experimental class used the 5E teaching model for teaching English reading;the control class used the traditional PWP teaching model to teach during a semester.The main purpose of this study is to address the following two research questions: 1.What are the effect of 5E teaching model on senior high school students’ thinking quality? 2.What are the effect of 5E teaching model on senior high school students’ English reading performance?Based on the above two research questions,this paper uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods and three research instruments such as thinking quality questionnaire,reading tests and interviews to collect and analyze data.The Thinking Quality Questionnaire was used to examine whether 5E model could improve students’ thinking quality,while reading tests and interviews were used to examine the effectiveness of 5E teaching model in improving students’ reading performance.The results shows that the use of 5E teaching model in English reading teaching can improve the students’ thinking quality.At the same time,there was a significant improvement in their English reading performance of the experimental class relative to the control class.Students have a high level of acceptance of the application of 5E teaching model,which could effectively improve their interest and confidence in English reading.This research shows that the application of 5E teaching model to classroom teaching is feasible and effective.We hope that it can provide some enlightenment for other types of senior high school English teaching.
