English is a widely used language in the world today which is an important communication media for international cooperation and a significant carrier of ideas and culture.The promulgation of the English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017 edition)(hereafter called New Curriculum Standard)is a new milestone in the reform of English teaching in China,which proposes the educational goal of developing the core competence of English,including language competence,culture awareness,learning competence and thinking quality.Reading is the most convenient and effective way to achieve core competence of English.Scaffolding model(also know as “bridge teaching”)is an important teaching model under the constructivism.At present,the domestic research on bridging teaching mainly focuses on the teaching model,definition,characteristics and the empirical study of the this model in different subjects and grades.Some scholars discuss from the perspective of autonomous learning and learning strategies,and the others emphasize from the perspective of the temporary and diversity of the bridge.However,in recent years,the bridging teaching model adopted in the high school English reading teaching in China has not reached a consensus on the number of scaffolding types.The application scope and model are single,outdated,and not systematic.It is rarely to combine the bridging teaching with New Curriculum Standards(2017 version)and core competence of English to conduct English reading teaching in high school.Based on the New Curriculum Standards,the actual situation of teaching,and the relevant requirements for cultivating the core competence of students,this research is guided by the scaffolding theory,combined with constructivism and the zone of proximal development,which creatively divides the scaffolding involved in reading teaching into 8 types and constructs a new model that is different from the past “bridge” teaching.It is mainly student-centered,and the reading teaching is carried out through six procedures to improve the learning competence and thinking quality of students.It plays an important role in improving the efficiency of reading teaching in high school,cultivating core competence of students and implementing New Curriculum Standards.The research questions are as follows:(1)Can the teaching of English reading in senior high school under the guidance of the new model improve students' reading scores and English total scores?(2)Can the teaching of English reading in senior high school under the guidance of the new model enhance students' learning competence of English core competence?(3)Can the teaching of English reading in senior high school under the guidance of the new model cultivate students' thinking quality of English core competence?In this study,two parallel classes were selected from the second grade of Zhangjiakou No.1 senior middle school.Guided by the scaffolding theory and New Curriculum Standards,the thesis constructs a model of bridging teaching.This research collects data through experiment,test,questionnaire,interview and other research methods.After the experiment,all the data were analyzed by SPSS 20.0.The pre-test and post test can intuitively reflect the changes about scores of the students in the two classes.The questionnaires examine the changes about the English core competence of students from the two dimensions of learning competence and thinking quality.In order to ensure the accuracy and authority of the test papers and questionnaires,the study randomly selects 6 testees in the experimental class to conduct interview,which includes the changes of their attitudes,suggestions for bridging teaching model,the changes in learning competence: learning strategies,channels,efficiency and habits,as well as the changes in the thinking quality: logicality,criticality,and innovation in thinking.The results prove that the teaching of English reading in high school under the guidance of the bridging teaching model can improve the reading and English total scores of students.The English reading teaching under the guidance of the bridging teaching model can cultivate the learning competence and thinking quality of students.According to the research results,the thesis puts forward suggestions that should be paid attention to in the reading teaching,which can provide references for English teachers:(1)Ensure the systematicness and coherence of the teaching process;(2)Different reading steps provide different scaffolding;(3)Tasks are designed to ensure the consistency of input and output;(4)The construction of bridge should be reasonable.
