This thesis is a report on an English-Chinese translation practice of the first four chapters of Very Sincerely Yours from the perspective of Relevance Theory.Popular literature comes from people’s daily life and reflects all aspects of the society. It often fits the demands and interests of the general public, reaching a wide audience. With the continuous development of international communication,a large potential market of English popular fiction is emerging in China, which brings higher demands to fiction translation. As a theory aimed at explaining communicative activities,Relevance Theory shows strong explanatory power of translation and also has guiding principles to the translation of popular fiction.Based on the characteristics of selected materials and Relevancy Theory, this thesis aims to deal with the difficulties during the translation practice and put forward proper methods for translating popular fictions, especially romantic comedies from case analysis. In light of Gutt’s views of direct translation and indirect translation, specific methods are proposed respectively for translation: directly reflecting the original information;saving the clues for inference;adding relative information;omitting irrelevant information;providing further explanation, changing the way of expression. This translation practice proves the adaptivity of Relevance Theory in the translation of romantic comedy and provides some reference for follow-up practice and studies in this field.
