Characterisation is the key to the success of a film, and the characters in new mainstream films are an important carrier of their ideological function. In recent years, the new mainstream films have focused their lenses on ordinary people with individual limitations and even weaknesses, showing their personal fate, personal growth and individual experiences, creating a number of realistic,three-dimensional and flesh-and-blood characters. This paper takes the character traits in the new mainstream films since 2000 as the object of study, trying to explore the new transformation of character traits in the new mainstream films and the interaction between these transformations and socio-political,commercial market, audience needs and social culture. The first chapter firstly compares the origin and evolution of the concept of individuality, and examines the trajectory of the concept of individuality in China;secondly,it outlines the context in which the individuality of characters in the new mainstream cinema was created. The second chapter focuses on the individuality of characters in the new mainstream cinema from 2000 to 2006.Since the comprehensive reform of the film system began in 1993,the commodity property of films has returned, and in order to better connect with the mainstream market, the creators of the new mainstream films, when portraying characters, have realized the return from "divinity" to "humanity" by adding the details of their daily lives, interpersonal relationships and ethical emotions. The characters have become more realistic and relatable. However, the high moral quality of these characters makes their self-choice initiative a ’collective orientation’,as they make choices for the sake of certain collective ideals. The third chapter focuses on the individuality of characters in the new mainstream cinema from 2007 to 2012.With the "people-oriented" philosophy of governance, the strong influx of Hollywood blockbusters and the development of Hong Kong’s film industry in the north, the new mainstream films, when creating characters, present the complexity of individual humanity to meet the aesthetic needs and expectations of the audience;through the construction of the growth of characters, the mainstream values are combined with the public imagination;and the individual’s autonomous ability is emphasized.By building up the growth of characters, the mainstream values are combined with the popular imagination;the autonomy of the individual is emphasized, and the value of the individual as a "human being" is shown. The fourth chapter focuses on the individuality of characters in the new mainstream films from 2013 to 2023.In the social context of the new era,the mainstream ideology is constantly being adjusted and improved, and the new mainstream films are changing from "melodrama" to "genre",and the individuality of characters in the new mainstream films at this stage is mainly manifested in the strangeness of individual characters, the individual In this stage, the individuality of the characters in the new mainstream cinema is mainly manifested in the strangeness of individual characters, the uniqueness of individuals, and the clever stitching with the mainstream ideology through the setting of personalized motives and the ultimate self-reconciliation.In summary,I believe that the creation and transformation of the individuality of characters in the new mainstream cinema is mainly the result of the continuous interaction between mainstream ideology and commercial cinema concepts.
