A Report On The Chinese Translation Of The History Of Psychology(Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Catford’s Translation Shift Theory

Mental health has been receiving more and more attention in China along with the increased pace of life.Therefore,it is necessary to introduce influential works on psychology to Chinese readers,and hence the author carries out the project of translating The History of Psychology(Excerpt)into Chinese.As a book of popular science,there are many terms as well as long and complex sentences in it.These terms and sentences cause great difficulties for translation.Catford’s translation shift theory is helpful in the language conversion at lexical and sentential level.Therefore,this thesis,using examples from this translation project,analyzes how to overcome the difficulties in the translation of psychological works based on Catford’s translation shift theory.It finds that level shifts can be achieved by amplification and that category shifts can be achieved by multiple methods including shifting of voice,subject,parts of speech,and the position of attributes and changing words/phrases into sentences.The research is expected to provide reference for the translation of similar texts in this field.
