In recent years,the giant panda has become a Chinese cultural symbol with high recognition worldwide.The overseas image construction of giant pandas by overseas Chinese media can not only optimize China’s national image and promote the recognition of Chinese culture overseas,but also play a unique role in maintaining the home and country feelings of Chinese people overseas and deepening their identity of Chinese culture.How Chinese mainstream media construct the media image of giant pandas overseas? In order to answer the question,the article takes the reports about giant pandas in People’s Daily(Overseas Edition)from2001 to 2021 as the analysis text to explore the characteristics and possible changes of the media image,and examine the cultural practice process of the media image discourse,as well as the hidden power relations and discourse intentions in the discourse.This paper chooses the theoretical perspective of discourse analysis,regards the giant panda report as a discourse that constructs an image,and uses the discourse analysis framework proposed by Fairclough to study the samples from three aspects: text dimension,discourse practice dimension,and social practice dimension.Combined with the relevant social and cultural background,the construction of the giant panda image in the report and its significance were analyzed.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,the main body of this paper is divided into four main parts.The introduction introduces the research background,significance and innovation point,and sorts out the related researches on Chinese cultural symbols and giant panda media images.The first part of the text is the research theory and method,that is,the first chapter,by reviewing the discourse analysis theory,put forward the basis of sample selection,as well as the main research methods and research steps adopted in this paper.The second part used the content analysis method to analyze the whole situation of the report,and according to the distribution characteristics of the report theme,the report year can be divided into two stages: “2001-2008” and “2009-2021”,which provided an important premise for revealing the changes of the image construction of giant pandas.The third part used discourse analysis and symbolic rhetoric analysis to analyze the sample-based self-built corpus,and found that two stages have constructed a giant panda image with both differences and continuity,namely “peaceful and united national treasure giant panda” and “cultural giant panda going to the world”.The fourth part analyzed the social cultural practice and found that the giant panda image construction in the past 21 years was a continuous generation process,which can be divided into three main lines:“world treasures with special treatment”,“endorsement ambassadors of Chinese culture” and “spiritual bonds of global Chinese people”.The conclusion summarizes the content and conclusions of the research,and considers the shortcomings of the research.
