Emotion regulation strategy is one of the effective measures to regulate negative emotions. The use of adaptive strategy can effectively reduce the negative emotional experience of individuals, and is beneficial to people’s physical and mental health. The use of non-adaptive emotion regulation strategies not only cannot regulate emotions effectively, but also will damage people’s health.Previous studies have found that individual differences affect people’s tendency to use emotion regulation strategies and their effects. As an important influencing factor, eating behavior has attracted the attention of researchers.Negative eating behaviors may discourage people from using adaptive strategies, while positive eating behaviors may have the opposite effect. Therefore, from the perspective of positive psychology, this study investigates the influence of intuitive eating on the tendency and effect of emotional regulation strategies used by college students through three sub-studies.The first study is to explore the relationship between intuitive eating and college students’ tendency to use emotion regulation strategies. The Intuitive Eating Scale-2 and Emotional Regulation Questionnaire were used to investigate college students, and the subjects were divided into high and low groups to investigate the differences in the use of emotional regulation strategies among college students with different levels of intuitive eating. At the same time, regression analysis was conducted on intuitive eating and the tendency to use emotion regulation strategies. The results showed that college students in both the high and low intuitive eating groups tended to use cognitive reappraisal strategies, and college students in the high intuitive eating group tended to use cognitive reappraisal strategies more than those in the low intuitive eating group.Meanwhile, regression analysis showed that intuitive eating had a positive effect on cognitive reappraisal and expression suppression. In the second study, the emotional regulation task was used to explore the effect of intuitive eating on the use of explicit emotional regulation strategies in college students.A mixed experimental design of2(intuitive eating group: high and low)× 4(emotion regulation strategy:neutral viewing, negative viewing, negative cognitive reappraisal, negative expression suppression)was used in the experiment, and the dependent variable was the emotional response of the subjects. The results showed that the highly intuitive eating group could effectively regulate negative emotions by using cognitive reappraisal and expression suppression, and compared with expression suppression, cognitive reappraisal could regulate negative emotions more effectively. At the same time, the effect of using emotion regulation strategies in the highintuitive eating group was better than that in the low-intuitive eating group, while the low-intuitive eating group could not effectively use emotion regulation strategies to regulate negative emotions. In the third study, emotional regulation paradigm and sentence sorting task were used to explore the effect of intuitive eating on the use of implicit emotion regulation strategies in college students.A 2(intuitive eating group: high and low)×2(emotion regulation strategy: cognitive reappraisal, expression suppression)inter-subject design was used in the experiment, and the dependent variable was the emotional response of the participants. The results show that high and low intuitive eating group, all participants can use cognitive reappraisal and expression suppression regulate negative emotions. In the highly intuitive eating group, the effect of cognitive reappraisal strategy was better than that of expression suppression. There was no significant difference in the moderating effects of cognitive reappraisal and expression suppression in the highly intuitive eating group. At the same time, there was no significant difference in the effects of cognitive reappraisal and expression suppression strategies between the high and low intuitive eating groups. In conclusion, this study draws the following conclusions: College students in the high and low intuitive eating groups are more inclined to use cognitive reappraisal strategies than expressive inhibition, and the intuitive eating group has the highest tendency to use them.In terms of explicit emotion regulation, the effect of cognitive reappraisal strategy in the high intuitive eating group was better than expression suppression, and the effect of cognitive reappraisal strategy in the high intuitive eating group was better than that in the low intuitive eating group. In terms of implicit emotion regulation, the effect of cognitive reappraisal strategy used by the high intuitive eating group is better than that of expressive inhibition, while the effect of cognitive reappraisal strategy and expressive inhibition strategy used by the high and low intuitive eating group is not significant.
