| The Diabetes Management: a manual for patient-centred care is a medical information text with strict logical thinking, which usually has more specialized vocabulary, long and difficult sentences and complex sentences. The first half of the book provides basic knowledge about the pathophysiology of diabetes and shares some different management approaches. The second half of the book presents medical knowledge about how food affects blood sugar and how to address cardiovascular risk factors. Therefore, how to clarify the internal logical relationship of the source discourse to accurately translate medical information is the key and difficult point in this translation practice. The translation practice is guided by the Thematic Progression Theory. After clarifying the differences between the English and Chinese languages in terms of the structure of the theme and rheme as well as The Thematic Progression Patterns, the function of The Thematic Progression Patterns in constructing the translation is clarified,i.e.,to accurately and intuitively grasp the discourse structure and information distribution of the source language,so as to realize the connection and coherence of the translated discourse. After comprehensively combing the discourse structure of the whole text,The Thematic Progression Patterns in the studied texts are further classified, namely,Parallel Progression Pattern,Concentrated Progression Pattern,Continuous Progression Pattern and Cross Progression Pattern and Composite Progression Pattern. The translation strategies of retaining or restructuring the Thematic Progression Patterns of the source language are proposed for the different Thematic Progression Patterns in the original text, and the techniques of adjusting the order, splitting and reorganizing, converting implicit subject into explicit subject and adding implicit information are also proposed under the strategy of restructuring The Thematic Progression Patterns of the source language.Through this translation practice, the author summarizes the following conclusions: In the choice of translation strategy, translators should first give priority to retain the original Thematic Progression Patterns.Because Thematic Progression Patterns of the original text refers to the consistency of the text.It is related to the change between old and new information, and also reveals the author’s writing ideas and communicative intention, which should be an important reference for the translator in translation.Secondly, due to the differences in the logical expression of English and Chinese languages,Chinese generally adopts the habit of firstly presenting consequence, narrative before statement, and the part then the whole contents. Therefore, the translator can take the techniques of adjusting the order, splitting and reorganizing to make the translation more in line with the Chinese habits.Secondly,Because English is a formal language,in the process of translation, part of the semantics may be lost due to the form. The translator needs to dig out the internal logic and implicit information of the discourse and then use necessary skills, such as adding cohesive words, transitional words and summative words to complete them in the translation. In addition, because English language is a non-empty subject language,in order to reflect the tortuous changes in sentences or discourse, pronouns such as "it" "there" and "this" are usually used as the form subject of the sentence. Therefore, the translator can convert the implicit subject into an explicit subject to avoid semantic ambiguity so as to get close to the author’s communicative intention. In medical translation, the author hopes to strengthen the translator’s emphasis on The Thematic Progression Patterns of the source language in medical texts,so as to accurately grasp its internal logical structure and semantic information. |
