Graduation thesis writing is an important condition for foreign students to obtain a degree.Due to the influence of the existing Chinese level,undergraduate students have encountered many difficulties in the completing their graduation thesis.Therefore,this paper attempts to start with the writing process of graduation thesis,and study the performance and development process of academic Chinese writing ability of undergraduate international students.This paper adopts the qualitative case study method,applies the theoretical framework of "extended learning-contradiction theory" in the perspective of social and cultural theory,selects three foreign undergraduate students majoring in Chinese at Lanzhou University as the research objects,and conducts a six-month diachronic tracking of their graduation thesis writing process.This paper deeply describes the unique contradictions of the three students in the writing process of their graduation thesis and the ways and means to resolve them,explore the common contradictions and their solutions in the writing process of the three students,and then analyze the subject factors and the intermediary factors such as tools,rules that affect the development of foreign students’ academic writing ability.Therefore this study draws the following conclusions: First,the development of the academic writing ability of foreign students is an expanded learning process in which individuals actively respond to and resolve contradictions in real academic practice.Contradiction is the main driving force to promote the development of students’ academic writing ability;Second,academic writing ability is constantly developed under the guidance of a series of intermediary factors such as tools,rules and people in the community.Third,scientific thinking is the biggest challenge faced by international undergraduate students in the process of academic writing,even higher than the difficulties caused by lack of language expression ability.On this basis,some suggestions are put forward to improve the academic writing ability of international students from the aspects of undergraduate students,curriculum,teaching content,teacher guidance,etc.
