| Body image is an individual’s description of his own body characteristics, which comes not only from his own perception, but also from the external evaluation of his body.Research shows that the more frequently individuals use social media, the higher their internalization level of "ideal figure" or suffer negative comments from others, they will experience negative body images.Cash and others believe that if individuals face the threat or challenge of body image, they can alleviate their negative emotions about body image if they adopt adaptive coping styles. On the other hand,if individuals adopt non-adaptive coping styles, they will lead to persistent negative body images.Cash refers to the behavior of individuals when facing the threat or challenge of body image as the coping strategy of body image. The coping strategies of body image are greatly influenced by the attitudes of the specific social culture transmitted by the media such as the internet, which convey the evaluation and expectation of the specific society on appearance, figure and body components, and the perception of the attitude of the individual to the body image in the society directly affects its evaluation and coping style. At the same time, the coping strategies of body image are also influenced by individual personality characteristics.People with high level of self-objectification are more likely to internalize their external views and look at their bodies from the perspective of a third party, and are more likely to face the threat or challenge of body image.Thompson,Cash and others think that when facing the threat or challenge of body image, adaptive behavior is helpful to individual’s physical and mental health, while non-adaptive behavior will lead to persistent negative body image and affect individual’s physical and mental health. The effective coping with body image is particularly concerned among college students. This study aims to develop a measuring tool that can be used to examine college students’ coping strategies with body image, and to explore its relationship with social attitude perception and self-objectification of body image. The purpose of the first study is to explore the structure of college students’ body image coping strategies, and to compile the "Body Image Coping Strategies Questionnaire" suitable for college students in China. In this study,426 college students and 621 college students were selected as the subjects of the initial test and retest respectively, and the item analysis and exploratory factor analysis of the initial test questionnaire were carried out, combined with the interview results,to form a formal questionnaire.Through confirmatory factor analysis, the measurement indexes of the retest questionnaire are tested. In the second study, the relationship between social attitude perception, coping strategies and self-objectification of body image of 530 college students was analyzed by questionnaire, and the mediating effect of self-objectification was tested by sequential test and deviation correction percentile Bootstrap method. The research draws the following conclusions:(1)The Coping Strategies Questionnaire of College Students’ Body Image consists of three parts, namely, appearance restoration strategy, rational acceptance strategy and avoidance strategy. The scale has good reliability and validity and can be used as an effective measurement tool.(2)There are significant gender differences in body image, social attitude perception, coping strategies and self-objectification.Female college students are more susceptible to fashion charm information and have a higher level of self-objectification.Compared with male college students, female college students choose more three strategies to deal with the threat or challenge of body image.(3)Social attitude perception of body image is an important predictor of college students’ body image coping strategies, which can influence the choice of college students’ body image coping strategies... |
