In the early stage of the Tang Dynasty, the North and South Yamen Forbidden Forces developed in parallel. With the collapse of the government system, the South Yamen Forbidden Forces gradually declined, while the North Yamen Forbidden Forces gradually grew and became the only source of force directly under the Tang Dynasty after the An-Shi Rebellion. After Suzong returned to Beijing, the imperial court gradually recovered its vitality, and the Northern Yamen Forbidden Army also began to rebuild. From Daizong to Dezong,a stable Northern Yamen Forbidden Army was gradually developed and formed,It lasted until the Huangchao Uprising in the late Tang Dynasty..This article is divided into four parts: The first part describes the origin and development of the Northern Yamen Forbidden Army in the early Tang Dynasty. The origin of the Northern Yamen Forbidden Army in the Tang Dynasty can be traced back to the period of Emperor Gaozu, and the embryonic form of the Northern Yamen Forbidden Army began to appear in the period of Emperor Taizong. The Northern Yamen Forbidden Army was established in the period of Emperor Gaozong.Since then, the Northern Yamen Forbidden Army has gradually separated from the Southern Yamen Forbidden Army system and developed independently. In the Xuanzong period, the Longwu Army was established, and Zuoyu Yulin and Zuoyu Longwu were the four armies of the Northern Yamen before the Anshi Rebellion. The second part discusses the state of the Northern Yamen Forbidden Army and the construction of a new order after the escape of Xuanzong and Suzong. The general of the Longwu Army escorted Xuanzong into Sichuan, and Suzong led the troops northward. The Yulin Army and the Longwu Army temporarily formed a "split" state. After Suzong returned to Beijing,he set up the Shenwu Army with the intention of establishing the Beiya Forbidden Army system with himself as the core.At the same time, under the power of Li Fuguo, the Northern Yamen Forbidden Army completed the integration and formed the six military systems of the Northern Yamen. The third part describes the continued development and construction of the Northern Yamen Forbidden Army during the Dai Zong period. The Northern Yamen Forbidden Army system during the Suzong period had a great impact on the political career of Daizong in his early years, and some problems needed to be solved. At this time, the six armies of the Northern Yamen could not recover to the scale of the Northern Yamen Forbidden Army before the Anshi Rebellion, and their combat effectiveness was also weak.Yu Chaoen led the Shence Army to return to Chang’an with Dai Zong. The scale and combat effectiveness of the Shence Army were just the reliable force needed by the central court.Since then, the Shence Army has officially become the forbidden army of the northern government of the Tang Dynasty.During the Dali period, the outer towns of the Shence Army formed two forms: in Beijing and outer towns. The fourth part discusses the formation of the "Northern Yamen Ten Armies" system in Dezong period. After Dezong ascended the throne,he used the Northern Yamen Forbidden Army to participate in the war of vassal reduction.A large number of forbidden troops were transferred to the battlefield, resulting in the emptiness of the capital, and Dezong fled in the Jingyuan mutiny. After the Shence Army regained Chang’an,Dezong began to carry out the reform of the forbidden army and formed the system of "ten armies in the northern government".The command power of the Northern Yamen Forbidden Army began to fall into the hands of the eunuchs, and the power of the eunuchs to control the army was constantly strengthened, forming an institutionalized eunuch leading system, which was even unshakable. At the same time, due to Dezong’s personal experience, the preferential treatment of the Northern Yamen Forbidden Army led to the increasing "arrogance" of the personnel of the Forbidden Army, and the constant conflict with the local government, which became a major problem in the middle and late Tang society.
