| In the context of social interaction, when a speaker selectively extracts certain information,it often leads to the speaker forgetting information related to the extracted information but not mentioned. This phenomenon is known as retrieval-induced forgetting(RIF).At the same time, the speaker’s selective extraction can also lead to other listeners forgetting specific items, which is called socially shared retrieval-induced forgetting(SS-RIF).Existing research has found that emotions can affect the way speakers process during selective retrieval, thereby affecting individual memory. In the field of social cognition, researchers have begun to pay attention to the impact of the emotion of learning materials on the socially shared retrieval-induced forgetting by listeners. However,so far,few studies have examined the impact of listeners’ emotional state on their socially shared retrieval-induced forgetting. In order to further reveal the role of emotions in social memory, this study examined the effects of listeners’ emotional states on their social shared retrieval induced forgetting from two dimensions: emotional valence and motivation.Experiment 1 employed a convenient sampling method to recruit 60 participants, and manipulated the emotional valence of the listener through videos, which was divided into three levels: positive emotion, neutral emotion, and negative emotion. The effect of the listener’s emotional valence on their socially shared retrieval-induced forgetting was investigated. The results show that the listener can produce the classic socially shared retrieval-induced forgetting phenomenon in both positive and neutral emotions, but it does not occur in negative emotions.Based on Experiment 1,Experiment 2 further explored the impact of positive emotions with different motivational intensities on socially shared retrieval-induced forgetting.Similarly,a convenient sampling method was used to recruit 30 participants, and the motivational intensity of the listener’s positive emotions was manipulated through videos, which was divided into three levels:high approach-motivated positive emotion, low approach-motivated positive emotion and neutral emotion. The performance characteristics of the listener’s socially shared retrieval-induced forgetting under different motivational intensities were investigated. The results show that listeners can produce socially shared retrieval-induced forgetting under emotional conditions of three motivational intensities, which is consistent with the results of Experiment 1.Furthermore,the amount of socially shared retrieval-induced forgetting effect of listeners in high approach-motivated positive emotion was significantly greater than that in low approach-motivated positive emotion, while the amount of socially shared retrieval-induced forgetting effect of listeners in low approach-motivated positive emotion was not different from that in neutral conditions. The above results indicate that the emotional state of the listener has an impact on their socially shared retrieval-induced forgetting.Specifically, the listener may experience socially shared retrieval-induced forgetting under positive and neutral emotions, and the magnitude of the effect of the phenomenon under positive emotions is influenced by the intensity of emotional motivation. These results extend the research progress on the influence of emotions on social memory, especially providing empirical evidence for whether and how listeners’ emotional state affects socially shared retrieval-induced forgetting. |
