| “Choosing Five out of Seven” is to extract five sentences from a complete and meaningful text,add two interference options and disrupt the order.Students are required to choose five out of the seven options to fill in the original text,making the text restore complete and clear.As a type of reading comprehension,“Choosing Five out of Seven”comprehensively tests students’ textual reading ability,language logical thinking ability,structural analysis ability,etc.Some researches show that “Choosing Five out of Seven”teaching often focuses on the explanation of vocabulary and the indoctrination of grammar,which leads to students lack of textual awareness and their inability to analyze the text frame structure as a whole,so the loss rate is high.Therefore,this thesis combines the thematic structure and information structure of textual function to make a new research attempt to the English “Choosing Five out of Seven” teaching.Aiming at the problems found in previous literature and in practical teaching,this thesis is to explore the effects of applying the textual function to the English “Choosing Five out of Seven” teaching on students’ reading ability in senior middle school.Reflected in students’ textual awareness,students’ reading habits and attitudes to “Choosing Five out of Seven”,and students’ problem-solving ability to “Choosing Five out of Seven”.Based on previous researches on the textual function and English teaching,the author adopts the method of questionnaire survey,test and interview to try to research the application of textual function to the “Choosing Five out of Seven” teaching in the senior middle school,and intends to solve the following three problems:(1)What are the effects of the “Choosing Five out of Seven” teaching based on the textual function on students’ textual awareness in senior middle school?(2)What are the effects of the “Choosing Five out of Seven”teaching based on the textual function on students’ reading habits and attitudes in senior middle school?(3)What are the effects of the “Choosing Five out of Seven” teaching based on the textual function on students’ problem-solving abilities in senior middle school?This research conducted in two parallel classes of the first grade of a senior middle school in Xinyang.The experimental class adopted the thematic progression pattern and information structure to teach “Choosing Five out of Seven” question type.The control class used Task-based Language Teaching method to teach “Choosing Five out of Seven”question type.The post-test scores of the experimental class were significantly improved compared with the control class(P=0.000<0.05),indicating that students’ problem-solving ability improved.There was no significant change in the post-test scores of the control class(P=0.159>0.05),indicating that the students’ problem-solving ability did not change much before and after the experiment.According to the analysis of the questionnaires data and the interviews,students’ textual awareness had enhanced in the experimental class,which is manifested in using given information and new information to analyze the text,and being able to analyze it in relation to the context.Students’ reading habits had improved significantly,which is mainly reflected in the students’ first browsing the whole text,and then analyzing the options,so that they can grasp the full text structure and main idea.Students’ attitudes towards the “Choosing Five out of Seven” are more confident than before the experiment and students’ enthusiasm for participating in classroom activities in class is improved.In conclusion,it shows that teachers apply the textual function to the English“Choosing Five out of Seven” teaching can improve students’ textual awareness,improve students’ reading habits and attitudes towards “Choosing Five out of Seven” question type,and improve student’ scores to a certain extent in senior middle school.Therefore,the application of textual function to the English “Choosing Five out of Seven” teaching can improve students’ reading ability to a certain extent in senior middle school. |
