Writing is one of the five fundamental skills in English,along with listening,speaking,reading,and translation.Writing is an important part of middle school English teaching.However,there are some problems in writing teaching,such as the correction of compositions being limited to form,which does not help students to enrich their content or improve their article structure.As a result,students’ writing enthusiasm decreases and writing difficulties arise.This kind of teaching does not help the development of students’ writing ability and hinders the improvement of their English level.Therefore,this article combines textual function and model essay recitation to be applied in middle school writing teaching,in order to improve the efficiency of writing teaching.Based on textual function,model essay recitation writing teaching involves analyzing the function and structure of model essays to help students understand the structure of the essay,so that they can better memorize it.For the purpose of this study,this article only focuses on the main clause structure and information structure within textual function.This study combines quantitative and qualitative research methods,mainly using questionnaires,tests,and interviews,to investigate the following two questions:(1)What is the impact of textual function-based model essay recitation on the textual writing ability of middle school students?(2)What is the impact of textual function-based model essay recitation on students’ writing attitudes?This study conducted a four-month teaching experiment at a middle school in Kaifeng City.Two parallel classes in eighth grade were randomly selected,one experimental class with 52 students and one control class with 50 students.The experimental class adopted model essay recitation writing teaching based on textual function,while the control class used traditional English writing teaching methods.Before and after the experiment,the researcher conducted questionnaires,tests,and interviews on both classes to collect data and used SPSS26.0 for statistical analysis.The research results show that firstly,model essay recitation writing teaching based on textual function can improve students’ textual writing ability to some extent.The experiment shows that the experimental group of students increased the number of words written per unit of time more significantly than the control group of students.The total number of errors in the experimental group’s compositions,including grammatical errors,spelling errors,and inappropriate word usage,decreased compared to the control group.Students’ writing fluency and accuracy have also improved to some extent.Furthermore,model essay recitation writing teaching based on textual function can improve students’ writing enthusiasm,and have a positive effect on students’ attitude towards writing.
