Hailed as the “world treasure house of oil”,Gulf countries of Middle East are famous for their rich oil reserves.Oil economy not only plays an important role in the economic development of Gulf countries, but also has a great impact on the development of the whole world. However, due to the environmental deterioration, the turbulence of the international oil market and the acceleration of energy transition, the Gulf countries’ overreliance on oil economy has triggered a series of problems. In view of this phenomenon,Giacomo Luciani, the professor of International Energy, and Tom Moerenhout, the visiting scholar at Center on Global Energy Policy, comprehensively discuss the current situation and the future predication of the sustainability of the Gulf oil economy, point out challenges faced by the Gulf countries, and expounds some progress made by the Gulf countries in promoting economic diversification. This paper is an English-Chinese translation practice report. The selected text When Can Oil Economies Be Deemed Sustainable belongs to the economic text, characterized by concise language, professional terms and lengthy sentences, which requires the author to master a certain degree of knowledge background and refer to a large number of materials. The practice report is composed of four parts: task description, task process, case analysis and practice conclusion. The third part, namely, case analysis,is the most important part.Based on the three principles of Vermeer’s Skopos theory, the author applies various methods to the translation process and analyzes the translation strategies of economic texts at lexical and syntactic levels respectively. This practice report analyzes and summarizes the problems and solutions in the process of translation, and it is hoped that this report can provide some reference for other relevant translators and researchers.
